After leaving the ICU, Franco noticed Petty's hand hanging limply by her side. His fingers twitched before he reached out and firmly gripped her hand.

Before she could pull away, he spoke. "Abacus has to undergo chemotherapy for the first three days. He's going to be extremely weak. We'll only be able to wait outside until the three days are up."

Seeing her red-rimmed eyes as she desperately fought back tears, he exhaled heavily. He took a step forward, pulling her into his arms and locking his embrace securely around her.

"You don't have to hold it in."

A muffled, agonizing sob tore from her throat against his chest. Slowly, the cries grew louder. It felt as though a tight string was vibrating inside Franco's own chest. He lifted his hand, cradling the back of her head, and rested his chin against her temple.

For a fleeting second, he had entertained the selfish thought of taking her away to that private island, keeping her safely hidden until the three days were over.

But he couldn't let her live with that regret.

Whatever the outcome, their family needed to face it together.

"We'll stay right outside the door. He'll know we're there. And after three days, you're the first person he's going to want to see. Promise me you'll wait with me. Please?"

Franco could feel her trembling. He didn't say another word. He just held her tighter, as if terrified that if he let go, she would vanish into thin air.

After she had fallen asleep the previous night, he had slipped into her hospital room. The medication she was taking had strong sedative effects, so she had no idea he was there.

He had seen the fresh bandage on her wrist.

She had just had it changed the evening before. The absolute earliest it was scheduled to be changed was tonight.
