Petty had been taken into The White Estate when she was seven. Jackson calling her easy to manage wasn't an exaggeration, as far as Galen knew.
Looking back, aside from a few mischievous streaks, she had always been a sweet kid.
But look at what had become of her now.
Galen glanced down at Abacus, who was happily excavating his noodle plate again. He pressed his lips together and ruffled the boy’s hair once more. "Being small has its perks."
Jackson took a damp cloth from the nanny and began gently wiping Abacus's face.
Since coming home from the hospital, the little guy’s appetite had soared, and he had packed on some healthy weight. His complexion was rosy, his chubby cheeks bouncing adorably as he chewed, currently shining with a thick glaze of noodle broth.
As Jackson wiped, the crushed noodles only smeared further across the baby's face, making an even bigger mess. Defeated, Jackson simply scooped him out of the high chair.
"Come on, Grandpa Jackson is going to get you all clean."
Galen helped untangle the boy’s little legs from the chair straps. "Once he's cleaned up, I'll take him for a spin."
Jackson paused, cradling Abacus securely in his arms, a flicker of worry crossing his face. "Will he be alright out there?"
"The doctor said as long as we avoid crowds, he's fine. I'm taking him somewhere completely safe and clean."
Jackson nodded slowly. "That sounds lovely. Misty Vale is large, but he ought to see more of the outside world. Thank you for doing this."
After a thorough scrub and a fresh change of clothes, Galen scooped the boy into his arms.
Abacus clamped down on a teething ring. "Gale."
"Uncle," Galen corrected with infinite patience, using his handkerchief to dab away a fresh trail of drool.
