Kathryn would be on her way back by now, driving through the woods, completely unaware of what was going on I pulled out my phone and dialed her number. No answer, I tried again, ill nothing.

“Shit.” I muttered, unable to hide it.

“What’s wrong?” Roman asked, glancing at me as we got into the car and pulled off toward the borders. “You look restless.”

1 clenched my jaw, my eyes fixed on the road ahead.

I hissed under my breath. “Kathryn. I can’t get a hold of her. She should be on her way back to the pack by now, and I have this bad feeling that something might happen to her.”

He cocked his head to the side. “You worry about her a lot these days. You’re almost acting like her bodyguard now.” Was he trying to make a joke? Because I wasn’t finding it funny at all.

I stared at him hard until his expression shifted, he raised his hands slightly. “Alright, easy. Sorry,” he said quickly. “I just think you’re worrying too much. Kathryn will be fine.” I didn’t believe a word of what he said.

“Can you step on it?” I snapped at the driver. He pressed harder on the gas. I needed to get to the borders before anyone else did. If I could reach her first, keep her close, I could make sure she stayed safe.

The Northern border was barely used, which was why the Rougarous preferred it for their business and escape the first time. The Eastern border was the busiest and shut down at certain hours. Kathryn had a special pass from Ace to use the Southern border, the same one Ace himself used. And that was exactly where the guards had picked up movement.

And true to the guards‘ words, there were trails. The scent wasn’t coming from outside the pack, they wouldn’t have been able to cross the southern border without notice, which means they moved inside. The southern border has the tightest security, so making their move around here was daring. That was when it hit me. Ace was right all along, they were living among us. We spread out immediately, each of us following the faint trace of their stench in different directions.

I called Kathryn again, it was dark except for the moon, my heart pounding harder as it rang, I prayed she would answer. This time, she picked up. She said she was already inside the pack, but before she could tell me exactly where she was, the line went dead. Like someone had grabbed the phone from her hand.

We kept searching, but those creatures knew how to disappear. They were almost impossible to track once they decided to hide. With every passing minute, I grew more restless, my eyes scanning every corner, looking for Kathy.

“I believe Kathy is in trouble,” I said to Ace when I finally reached him through the mind link.

“Kathy is with Charlotte,” he replied, like he was sure of it.

“Yeah, that’s what I thought too. I assumed she would sleep over there,” I said quickly. “But she came back. I was on the phone with her when it suddenly went silent. I couldn’t hear anything anymore, like someone took her phone. I really have a bad feeling something is wrong.”

Before my mind could catch up with my holy, I pulled her into tight hug. She broke down in my arms, crying like a baby, her whole body shaking as she held onto me.

“They’re in there. They’re…” she said between sobs, her voice shaking so badly the words kept breaking.

I held her closer, my hand moving slowly at the back of her head pressing her into me like I could shield her from everything at once. I let her cry her eyes out. Roman and some of the men moved past us, heading in the direction Kathryn had pointed.

I lowered myself to the ground and pulled her with me, settling her on my lap without even thinking about it. She didn’t pull away. If anything, she leaned into me more. I brushed her hair back and cupped her face gently.

“You’re safe now,” I murmured, my forehead resting lightly against hers. “No one’s going to hurt you. I’m here.

I kept saying it, until her breathing began to calm. I didn’t know how long we stayed like that. It felt like the world had narrowed down to just the two of us.

Roman mind–linked me later, telling me they found a cabin and caught a few men trying to escape, and had taken them back to the pack. He said they left a car close by for me.

Inside the car, she finally spoke again, her voice softer but still shaken. “I don’t believe this happened to me. They wanted to feed me to the Rougarou.” She turned to look at me. “What about the driver? Did they find him?”

I cleared my throat. “Ahhmm… he was found dead in one of the cells. They were about to feed on him when Roman and his men got there.” I paused, watching her face. “We caught the animals who did it. I promise you, he won’t go unpunished.”

She broke down all over again, her body shaking. “He died because of me. If he wasn’t assigned to follow me around, he’d still be alive.”

“Shu… shu… shu…” I whispered, pulling her closer, trying to calm her, but she couldn’t stop.

“He had a family,” she cried. “He told me his wife just gave birth to their second pup. He was so happy. He bought gifts for them from the human world.” Her voice cracked. “How are they supposed to live now?”
