Exhaustion slowly creeps in heavy and unavoidable, my thoughts slowing, eyelids drooping despite myself.
After a moment, Dominic’shifts.
“We should lie down,” he says.
I lean forward instantly, flashing a look back. “I’m fine sitting.”
He lies down anyway, stretching back leaving me between his legs, one atm bent behind his head like he’s
back in bed.
I stare at him. I’m not laying with him.
Cold seeps back in immediately, spiteful and fast.
“…Unbelievable,” I mutter.
I last maybe ten seconds before I give in, lowering myself down.
“Make sure you lay on the-”
“The right side of you,” I mutter, “I know.”
His head popped up. “You know?”
I froze, then adjusted his jacket and arm like I was prepping a pillow. “Just a guess.”
He gave me a furrowed look but, maybe too tired, his head fell back to the dirt.
Curling against his chest, I fit perfectly into the space his arm leaves open for me. Like he was expecting me.
He wraps that arm around me without hesitation.
I feel his mouth curve into a smug little smirk against my hair.
He knew I’d come.
I sigh, but let him have the win.
We lie there in silence, the fire warming our faces, his body a solid wall of heat and safety to my back. I never quite realized how big he was. Sure I knew he was tall, broad, but close like this, it felt more like cuddle a
massive bear.

Chapter 103
Every breath he takes rocks me gently, steadily.
I want to sleep, my body begging. But it’s…to quiet.
And I can’t stand it.
Because if I stay quiet any longer, I start thinking
About him.
About me on him-
My fingers curl lightly into his shirt.
Nope.
“Why did you come after me?” I ask, desperate for any distraction.
Dominic doesn’t move at first. His arm stays firm around me. I wait for an explanation. A justification. Some Alpha speech about responsibility or duty.
Instead, he shrugs.
Just barely, moving my cheek.
“I had a feeling, the same one I had when you turned blue at the lake,” he says. “I just moved.”
I lift my head. “That’s it?”
“I knew you were in trouble,” he replies simply. “That you needed me.”
The words hit harder than any speech ever could.
Because my Dominic, my Dominic would never say that.
Mine had never chanced after me, never defended me from his friends, and never cared if I was in trouble or
not.
He would say my problems are my own, I should handle them myself.
୮
In another life, when I fell into a pit like this, I was left there. Hours passed. My voice went hoarse from shouting. My hands bled from clawing at dirt that kept giving way beneath me. I didn’t know if I’d be found in time.
When they finally did find me, the search party laughed and pointed, calling dull.
Vivian. Dominic. Others,
I spent three days in the hospital afterward, hooked to fluids, my body hollowed out by dehydration and
fear.
