Dominic’s POV
Ellie’s footsteps echoed up the stairs, followed by the sound of a door slamming a few moments later. Marcus and I stood there in the middle of the sitting room, staring at the spot where she’d just been, then at
each other.
I looked at the maid, who was still standing in the corner. Her eyes were wide, mouth hanging open. She couldn’t have been much older than eighteen.
“It’s okay,” I said. “You’re not attending any meetings.”
The maid let out a breath, curtsied, and scurried out of the room.
My Beta turned to me. “Sir, what’s going on with her?”
I passed a hand over my face. “A lot of things, Marcus. A lot of things.”
Marcus made a sound of agreement and left me alone with my thoughts after that.
I’d expected Ellie to still be mad at me after our disaster of a wedding day, but I had not expected her to shirk her Luna duties so openly. Even though she wasn’t happy with the wording of our contract, she’d still made a promise to do her due diligence.
Being here and attending her own meetings was part of that promise.
My mind instantly went back to the trauma she claimed to have endured. I was certain by now that it was real, and serious, and that yesterday had triggered something in her that was still making her act out.
My resolved hardened even more than it had last night, when I had woken up in a cold sweat from that awful dream.
Ellie loved me. Even now. I was sure of it.
I had to win her heart back.
She didn’t feel safe with me for some reason. Well, I was going to fix that, and maybe then she would tell me
her trauma, the way a husband and wife should be open with each other. Then, maybe, just maybe,
