Chapter 196
Ellie’s POV
I spent the entire day at the academy that day, just as I had the day before. It wasn’t until after sunset that I finally decided that it was time to go home. I hoped to find that Dominic had already eaten without me so I could just go to my room.
Unfortunately, I wasn’t quite so lucky today.
The moment I entered the house, Dominic stepped into view.
“Ellie.” He stepped forward and took my coat before I could stop him. “You’re right on time. We were just about to sit down for dinner.”
“Oh, I’m not hungry-‘
“Please eat with us.”
I looked up at Dominic, taken aback by the softness in his voice. His eyes were imploring in a way I hadn’t seen before, and his hand was resting on my arm, and for a moment, my resolve crumbled.
The fact of the matter was, no matter how angry I was with him, no matter how much he had betrayed me, a small, traitorous part of me still had a soft spot for the man. I blamed it on that damn mark on my neck, but a little voice in the back of my mind whispered that it was something more.
Looking at him now, seeing that expression on his face, made my heart flutter in a way I wished it didn’t.
That was precisely why I knew I couldn’t let it go further. Because it would if I let it, and then I would really be screwed. I didn’t want to wind up in exactly the same place I had been in during my past life.
I couldn’t die again.
“I’m not hungry,” I repeated. “Thanks for the offer.”
Dominic’s expression hardened ever so slightly. His grip tightened around my arm, and before I could react, he took my hand and pressed it against his abdomen.
My breath hitched. I felt the expanse of muscle beneath his shirt, but I felt the scar, too. It had healed over already, but the mark would likely remain for a very long time. It might never even fade.
“Need I remind you,” he whispered, spreading my fingers across his waistline, “that you plunged a knife into me just two days ago? On our wedding day, no less?” He leaned in, so close I could feel his breath fanning over my cheek, and whispered, “You owe me one dinner, Ellie.”
I didn’t move for a long moment. I wanted to tell him that he also betrayed me that day, but the words wouldn’t come. Because truthfully, I did feel bad for what I’d done. Of course I fucking did I stabbed him!
