Chapter 203
But I couldn’t. It had happened, no matter how much I tried to wish it out of existence, and it was going to happen again if I stayed. And no amount of good feelings in Dominic’s arms could change that.
I knew that now.
“Alpha Dominic.” A male voice suddenly called out to us, causing both of us to turn-or rather, causing Dominic to turn and drag me with him, because I dug my heels in, making my sneakers squeak across the
wooden floor.
“Alpha Brandon.” Dominic gestured to me. “Brandon, you know my wife, Ellie.”
“Pleasure,” the man said, extending his hand. Mine currently had one of those little cocktail glasses of prawns and sauce in it. I popped a prawn into my mouth, letting my fingers get greasy, then held my hand out without wiping it off.
“Likewise,” I said, my mouth full.
The Alpha stared at my hand and decided not to shake it. Dominic huffed hotly, fingers digging into my back, but said nothing. They launched into a discussion that I had no interest in. I finished my prawns, then
looked around for more.
Just then, a passing waiter walked by with another tray. I reached out, grinning, but deliberately smacked the tray and sent it flying.
The crowd, including Dominic and the other Alpha, fell silent as the prawns crashed to the floor. “Oh, shit,” I said, pressing my hand to my mouth. I crouched and began to pick up the food with my bare hands. ” Sorry, I’ve got it-Sorry-”
“Ellie.” Dominic caught my wrist and hauled me to my feet. My fists were full of shrimp, their tails sticking out between my knuckles. The other Alpha was currently staring at me, mouth agape, and a few people were snapping pictures on their phones.
Making a face, Dominic plucked one free and dropped it in a nearby trash can. “Maybe it’s time we go
home.”
I nodded, trying not to show the relief on my face. Good. One step closer to my goal.
୮
By the time we got home that night, I was almost certain that divorce was on the horizon. Despite our brief moments of happiness at the gala, there was no way that Dominic could look past everything.
But fate would not have it that way, it seemed. Not yet, at least.
