llie’s POV

I stared at the list for a long time, feeling some part of myself battle with another. I knew I shouldn’t do this; it was petty and didn’t at all align with everything I had worked so hard to accomplish in this life. By getting involved, I was just letting Vivian win in the game of moral superiority.

And yet…

I simply couldn’t help myself.

The pen found its way into my hand before I could think better of it. I bent over the table, thinking for a moment, then smiled and added the first food to the list.

Squid.

Whether Vivian, or even Dominic, liked to admit, I knew him better than I let on. I knew exactly what irked Dominic the most. What sounds, like chewing, made him want to gag.

I also knew exactly which foods were his least favorite.

And I knew his handwriting.

I copied his penmanship as best I could, making sure to add a little flourish over the i’s and j’s. I had to make it believable-like Dominic had seen the list in passing and added his “favorite” foods.

Little did Vivian know that all of these foods were the type to make him want to puke at the dinner table.

Octopus-the suction cups stuck to his tongue and made him gag. Beef tartare-might as well eat play-doh. Escargot-just… why? And mozzarella sticks-he always said the stringy insides reminded him of worms.

When I was satisfied with the list, I stepped back, setting the pen aside and looking upon my work with a smile. A little voice in the back of my head told me that this was pointless, but before I could change my mind, I heard the sound of Vivian’s distinctive quick, clipped footsteps approaching.

Grabbing my plate, I quickly slipped into the pantry, stepping out of view just as she rounded the corner to the kitchen.

“Ah! There it is,” she muttered to herself, walking over to the table. She picked up the notepad, then furrowed her brow as she studied it.

A moment passed. Vivian looked at the list, then looked around curiously. “Dominic?” she called out.

No answer. I slunk further into the shadows to avoid being seen and held my breath, keeping one eye on Vivian though the crack in the door.

She stood there for another long moment, studying the list again. Then, her lips curved into that familiar, triumphant little smile.

“All of his favorites, huh?” she whispered, tucking the notepad into her pocket. “Don’t mind if I do.”
