I put my bag back on my shoulder and went to the academy..

I sat through two classes without retaining a single word of either of them, turning the same thought over in my head: Dominic was walking into something he had no idea was coming, and he refused to hear me, and the pack was going to pay for it.

That wasn’t acceptable.

By the time the afternoon came around, I had made up my mind. I was going to try again. If it still didn’t work, then I would take matters into my own hands.

I caught up with Dominic in the study just before dinner. He was at his desk, papers spread out in front of him. He glanced up at me when I entered, clearly expecting someone else.

“I’m busy,” he said curtly.

“I just need five minutes,” I said.

“Ellie…”

“Five minutes.” I stepped inside. “Then I’ll leave you alone.”

He cursed under his breath, then slammed his pen down on the desk. “Ellie, we’ve been over this. I have everything handled.”

I crossed my arms and refused to back down. “If any refugees present themselves at our border during or after the conflict with the other pack, I need you to have them screened by healers before they’re let in. Thoroughly screened. Not a quick once-over. I’ll handle it all if you want me to.”

“No,” he said. “There’s no risk of plague, and even if there were, you’ve proven yourself to be untrustworthy when it comes to matters of the pack.”

“A single festival is a whole hell of a lot different than the thing I’ve been studying for months,” I pointed out. “Besides, I’m still your Luna since you won’t divorce me, and maybe if you had invited me to the meeting, I could have-”

“So that’s what you’re upset about.” He sighed. “Vivian warned me about this.”

“What?”

“Vivian mentioned that you seemed bothered about not being included this morning,” he said, picking up his pen and returning to work. “And I get it. I should have told you. But you can’t be yelling all day about imaginary plagues just to get back at me.”
