Chapter 255

“Good luck,” I said, turning to leave. But before I could take a step, Dominic’s hand shot out and caught my
wrist.
“A kiss, then,” he said. “Since you’ve decided the flower was optional.”
“I gave you a flower,” I said.
“You gave me a corpse,” he replied. “Kiss. Now.”
I held his gaze. The room was as silent as a morgue. I was aware of Mara standing directly behind me, and the pack elders, and Ryan, who I was fairly certain was studying the ceiling.
I was also aware that refusing outright was going to make a scene that I wasn’t prepared to deal with at this particular moment.
Suppressing a sigh, I leaned up and pressed my lips to his.
The kiss was supposed to be perfunctory as best. A mere peck.
But then Dominic’s hand came up and settled at the back of my neck, and the mate bond fiared to life for the first time in a long time, and for a moment I forgot about the dead flower and the handmaid and all of it.
My lips softened against his and I leaned in, just slightly, just for a second.
My eyes fluttered shut.
This was almost… pleasant.
But then I caught myself and pulled back.
I kept my face neutral. Dominic looked down at me, but I didn’t meet his gaze. I wasn’t sure if I wanted to see the look that was likely waiting for me.
“You can act out all you want, Ellie,” he whispered in my ear so only I could hear. “But you’re still mine, and I’m still yours. Your body won’t forget that.”
