Most of the morning had been a wash. Mara had been hovering around me all morning, constantly appearing out of nowhere and monitoring me out of the corner of her eye like I couldn’t tell what she was up

Eventually, I took the book to the gardens under the guise of getting some air. I kept it tucked under my arm where the title couldn’t be seen until I found a nice, private spot amongst the hedges where a small stone bench sat unused. Mara wouldn’t be likely to find me here, at least not right away, giving me a little time to read unbothered.

I settled down, brushing the leaves and pine needles off the bench, then opened the book on my lap and continued to read where I had left off last night.

The chapter on documented reincarnation accounts was dense and slow-going in places, and a lot of it still didn’t apply to my situation in any direct way. But I kept reading, skimming over the sections that seem irrelevant.

I was about three quarters of the way through the chapter when I turned the page and found the heading: ” The Lycan Princess and the Throne of Ashmoore.”

Lycans. The name instantly piqued my interest, given the research I had done into them recently. I sat up straighter and began to read.

The account was older than the others in the chapter, and the writing reflected that. It was more formal and stilted, but I managed.

A Lycan princess, the second daughter of a ruling bloodline, had died following what was officially recorded as a sudden illness. She was young, healthy, and by all accounts had shown no prior symptoms.

The death was accepted. Mourned.

Or so she said.

The thing was, historically speaking, this event never happened. The princess one day woke up and, as if in some kind of hysterical fit, ran to her father’s throne and threw himself into her arms, claiming that she

had died and been sent back in time.

She said that the events happened three years later.

No one believed her at first. The healers said she must have suffered some kind of stroke in her sleep that implanted this delusion into her head.

But then, as time went on, the princess’s predictions began to come true. It was as if she could foresee every major event.
