A roar split the air, and for a moment, I thought it came from my own throat before I heard gasping behind me and realized that it was Dominic. I looked up through blurred vision and saw him standing over Gareth’s body. The rogue wasn’t moving. His throat was torn out, his one good eye staring blankly at the sky. His eyepatch lay abandoned on the ground, not far from where I knelt now.

Dominic shifted back to human form. He was covered in blood, his chest heaving, his hands shaking. He turned and saw me holding my mother.

His face crumpled.

“Ellie,” he said. He started walking toward me with swift strides.

“Don’t,” I said, curling my lip.

He stopped.

“Don’t come near me.” I looked back at my mother, away from him.

“Ellie, I’m so sorry-

“This is your fault,” I said.

“I know,” he said. “I know, and I-”

“You held me back,” I said. “I could have saved her. I could have gone to him, and she would still be alive.”

“He was never going to let you go.”

“That didn’t seem to be a concern for you when you had to choose between me and Vivian.”

Dominic fell silent. I didn’t look up. I didn’t care to see whatever expression he was conjuring up this time. No matter what it was, I knew it wouldn’t be real.

A few minutes later, I heard footsteps approaching. Dominic’s Beta appeared at the edge of the clearing, followed by several warriors and two pack medics, clearly having heard the screams. They stopped short when they saw the bodies.

“Alpha,” the Beta said. “We heard-” He looked at me, then at my mother. His face went pale. “Goddess.”

“Take them both,” Dominic said. His voice was hoarse. “The rogue goes to the morgue to be cremated; 1 don’t give a shit where you dump the ashes, so long as they’re not on pack land. Ellie’s mother…” He looked at me. “She deserves a proper burial.”

The medics moved forward. One of them crouched beside me.

“Luna,” he said gently, placing his hand on my shoulder, “we need to take her now.”

I didn’t let go.
