The Luna Queen's Rebirth (Ellie and Dominic) novel Chapter 358

Chapter 358

Ellie’s POV

Professor Moar’s suggestion followed me home.

I turned it over in my head the whole walk back, hands shoved in my jacket pockets, kicking at a pile of leaves on the sidewalk.

Reject him.

Two words.

It was simple enough on the surface, the kind of thing that sounded obvious when someone in a position of power said it out loud in a plain, matter-of-fact voice from behind a desk. But the reality of it was something else entirety.

I’d seen Vivian’s mate reject her with my own eyes. The pain of a rejection was supposed to be unbearable, a severing, literal and physical, like something being ripped out of you from the inside. Some wolves never fully recovered. Some spent years afterward feeling the ghost of the bond where it used to be, an ache that never fully went away.

Some died.

Despite everything, I didn’t want him to die. I just… wished we weren’t bound the way we were, and I didn’t know what to do about it without causing both of us immense pain.

By the time I got back to Lucas’s house, I hadn’t come to any conclusions. I just felt tired, the way I always felt tired these days, like my body was running on fumes. I needed dinner.

Lucas was already home, which surprised me. He was usually out working until all hours, just as I often was. Judging from the way he froze when he saw me enter the house, we were both equally surprised to see the other before midnight.

“You’re home early,” I said, dropping my bag by the door.

“I could say the same to you.” He looked me up and down. “You look like hell.”

“Gee, thanks.”

“Bad day?” he asked.

I shrugged. “Professor Moar wants me to reject Dominic,” I said.

Lucas turned around fully at that. He looked at me for a moment. “She said that?”

“Straight out. Sever the mate bond, she said. Like it was that simple.”

“That’s, uh, surprising to hear from someone like Moar. I don’t think I’ve ever exchanged more than three words with the woman in all my life.” He was quiet for a second, then grabbed his phone. “I was thinking of ordering takeout. You in?”

“Only if we get lo mein,” I said.

Lucas smirked. “Lo mein it is.”

A little while later, the food arrived, and we ate on the couch with the takeout containers spread across the coffee table with the TV on low in the background. I picked at my lo mein without much appetite, twirling the noodles around my fork and setting it back down again.

Lucas ate like he hadn’t had a meal all day, which he probably hadn’t. He finished half his container before he said anything.

“She’s not wrong, you know.”
