Ellie’s POV
I pulled the chair from the corner of the room over to the bedside and sat down. I started unpacking the containers, setting them out on the table. The smell of the rotisserie chicken filled the room immediately, warm and rich, and I heard Dominic’s stomach growl.
“When was the last time you ate?” I asked, glancing at him. He looked thinner than the last time I’d seen him.
“I had some broth today,” he said.
“That’s not food.”
Dominic shrugged, and I sighed. I opened the container of chicken, then took a roll, tore it open, and pulled some chicken off the bone with my fingers. I put the chicken in the roll, smashed the top back on, and held it out to him.
He stared at it for a long moment before he finally took it.
We didn’t talk much while he ate, which was fine by me. I picked at some of the bread and watched him carefully. By the time he’d gotten through two sandwiches, some of the color had returned to his skin.
“You didn’t have to do this,” he said, leaning back against the headboard with a third sandwich in hand.
I took a bite of mine. “I know.”
He was quiet. “Why did you?”
I chewed. Swallowed. “I ran into my stepfather today,” I said.
Dominic tilted his head.
“He tracked me down to tell me that my divorce was bad for his investments.” I glanced at him sidelong. “He wanted me to get back together with you so he could make money off of you. It made me realize that maybe I’m not the only one who has been used by other people in my life.”
Dominic snorted. “I never liked him, for what it’s worth.”
I smiled wryly. “No one does. Mom barely does-did.” I scrunched up my eyes for a moment, then opened them again, shaking my head. “Anyway, not that I’m forgiving you for everything that happened just because of one bad conversation with rav stepfather, but… I guess I was on my way to see you before I thought too much about it.”
Dominic let out a small breath at that. “Well… Thank you for coming. I’m glad to see you.”
ľ
I nodded curtly, polished off the rest of my sandwich, and stood as I wiped my fingers on my jeans. “Now,” I said, “I’m not here just for charity. I told you you needed to pull yourself together, and you haven’t, so now I’m going to make you. Get up ”
He didn’t move.
“You have a bathroom. Go use it.” I started picking up the empty containers. “I’ll help you today, just this once Consider y dir apology for my stepfather. Nothing more.”
