“Me,” I said, touching my belly. “I was too nervous to eat much this morning. I’m starving.”

Abigail waved the server over and ordered appetizers for the table. We ordered our drinks, too-1 splurged on a cocktail on the menu that looked good and very alcoholic, figuring I deserved to get a little tipsy after the past few

weeks.

A few minutes later, our drinks arrived along with a positively enormous plate of steaming fries. Sarah raised her glass before we could all take a sip.

“To Ellie,” she said, smiling. “Who aced her final and is making the rest of us look bad.”

“I don’t know that I aced it,” I said with a laugh.

“To Ellie,” she repeated.

Lucas lifted his glass, and despite his best efforts to look pissed about Dominic being here, his lips were tugging upwards. Abigail raised hers with a quiet smile.

Dominic held his up last. He glanced once around the table, and then he looked at me and said, simply, “She’s worked her ass off for this. She deserves it.”

His eyes met mine over our glasses. I felt my cheeks warm, but I held his gaze. It was soft and steady and comforting in a way I didn’t expect it to be, and suddenly, I was glad he was here.

We clinked our glasses together and drank.

The rest of the evening was actually pretty pleasant. Sarah carried most of the conversation to avoid awkward silences, and once she got a couple drinks in her, Abigail warmed up as well. Lucas was mostly quiet, but not combative in any way. I probably had two more drinks than I should have, and by the time our entrees came-my stomach rumbling finally pissed everyone off enough to order quesadillas-my head was spinning rather pleasantly.

By ten-thirty, coats were coming out. Sarah pulled me into a hug that lingered, and said quietly into my ear, “I like this version of him.” She pulled back before I could respond. Abigail hugged me and said goodnight. Lucas told me he’d wait outside, and gave Dominic one final look before walking out.

That left the two of us standing beside the emptied booth.

“Thank you for inviting me,” Dominic said.

“Thanks for coming. Just promise you won’t judge me for how drunk I got.”
