Chapter 377
Ellie’s POV
I checked my email four times before seven in the morning.
The fourth time, I finally realized how ridiculous I was being and put my phone face-down on the vanity all the way on the other side of the room. That lasted about two minutes before I was padding back over, checking it while biting my lip.
Still nothing.
By that point, I knew I wasn’t going to be able to get back to sleep. So I got up, pulled on a sweater, and went downstairs. Lucas was already in the kitchen with his coffee in hand, still in his pajamas. He looked at me over the rim of his mug.
“Nothing yet?” he asked, blowing on the hot liquid.
“Nope. Coffee?”
He pointed at the coffee maker. I poured myself a cup and sat at the island, setting my phone face-up on the counter in front of me. We drank in silence for a while. Outside, the sky was gray and flat. I could hear the wind howling against the eaves of the house.
“Forecast says it might snow today,” Lucas said.
“This soon?” I asked.
“Crazy, right?” Abigail suddenly materialized in the doorway, dressed for work. She crossed the room and filled her travel mug with coffee. She glanced at me over her shoulder. “You hear anything yet?”
“Nope.” I turned the locket over between my thumb and forefinger and looked at my black phone screen.
Lucas noticed. “What’s that?” he asked, leaning over to take it from me. I let him, showing him how to open it. His eyes widened when he saw what was inside.
“Dominic gave it to me,” I murmured.
Lucas sat back and stared at me.
“Please don’t look at me like that,” I said, taking a sip of my coffee. “It was just a nice gesture, that’s all.”
Abigail was smiling coyly at me, but said nothing. She then glanced at her watch and cursed under her breath.” I’m gonna be late.” She walked over, kissing my cheek, and ruffled my hair. “Good luck today. Not that I think you’ll need it.”
Once Abigail was gone, Lucas looked at me again. “So he’s giving you presents now.’
“Lucas…”
Just then, my phone buzzed.
Ì grabbed it so fast I nearly knocked it off the counter. Lucas sat forward. I opened the email from the healer academy’s results portal and read the first two lines. Then I read them again, because the first time my brain didn’t quite process what it was seeing.
