Ellie’s POV

The room Alpha Terence led me to was a small office off the back hallway, just a desk and a few chairs and a window looking out over the mountain slope. He closed the door and turned to look at me, opal eyes sweeping over me once, twice, before he silently gestured to one of the empty chairs.
I sat, or rather plopped, almost like a child who was in trouble. He leaned his cane against the desk and limped over to another chair, sitting across from me.
The room was silent for a long moment. I wasn’t even sure if I was breathing, because every time I tried to inhale, I would see those eyes that were so much like my own and I would wonder-could it be?
“I’ll start at the beginning,” he said. “And I’d ask you to let me get through most of it before you ask questions. Some of it will be difficult to hear.”
I nodded mutely.
Terence explained that his family were Lycan descendants. They had been for centuries, the bloodline running back to Aurelie before the war tore everything apart. They kept it quiet, ut of necessity, of course.
After the war, the Lycans who assimilated into whichever werewolf packs didn’t murder them watched the ones who didn’t make it get systematically hunted for years. They couldn’t do anything about it, because silence meant survival, and survival mattered.
Over the generations, the Lycans quietly bred into the packs, slowly losing the traits that made them unique. They lost their opal eyes, their affinity for rare plants. They became little more than werewolves with that feeling of missing something that they’d never had, like there was so much more out there that their souls wanted to experience, but they didn’t know what it was or why.
I knew that feeling better than I could say.
Thirty years ago, Terence’s father died when Terence was just eighteen. Terence inherited their small, nomadic pack, only consisting of about thirty people. He eventually met his mate, Fay, a warrior who also had Lycan blood running through her veins, also significantly less than Terence.
They fell in love, got married, and had a daughter.
The raid came the night the daughter was born. A large and organized group of rogues caught the pack mere hours after the child had entered the world, when the Alpha and Luna were most vulnerable. The rogues were searching for something, he said, but they didn’t seem to find it. So they killed everyone. Or at least, they tried to.
Fay joined the battle despite Terence’s insistence that she evacuate with the others. She said it was her duty. She’d just given birth and yet she wrapped herself in bandages and put on her armor and fought. Terence fought alongside her until he lost her in the fray. Their daughter, meanwhile, was supposed to be whisked to safety by the Luna’s right-hand woman, an Omega named Rose.
