The Luna Queen's Rebirth (Ellie and Dominic) novel Chapter 400

Because we’d already been through this before. We knew how it ended. But this time, he wasn’t going to stand in the way of what I wanted, even if it hurt, and…

I appreciated that.

“Thank you,” I said.

He nodded. I hadn’t realized it, but we’d scooched a little closer as we spoke, and the motion made our shoulders/ brush. “I’m just proud of you, Ellie,” he said. “I can’t believe how far you’ve come. And I’m so happy you finally found family. I wish I could be here to see you uncover more about your past, but I can’t, so I want you to know that I’ll keep being proud of you from afar.”

“You’re not… bitter?” I asked.

He shook his head. “I was, for a while. After the divorce.” He looked into his cup, half-empty now. “But I understood why you left. That day I exiled Vivian, I realized how I had wronged you, and I couldn’t be bitter anymore. I was just sad.” He glanced at me. “I’m still sad. But I can’t be completely sad when I get to see you thriving. That’s all that matters to me now; that you’re happy, succeeding, even after everything I put you through.”

His words struck me somewhere in the chest, in a spot I didn’t want to name. My eyes began to prick with tears, and I quickly looked away, swirling my tea around in my cup. I’d barely touched it.

“You’re different from my past life,” I murmured.

The moment I said it, I regretted it. I jerked my head up to find that Dominic was staring at me, his brows lifted, face drawn with confusion.

“Past life?” he asked.

Shit.

“I meant… before the divorce,” I said, cheeks heating.

Dominic gave me that look, the same one he’d given in my father’s house when Terence asked if I had any other abilities. I cleared my throat and quickly stood, taking his empty cup from him.

“I’m exhausted,” I said. “Not making sense anymore.”

Dominic didn’t argue, but I could feel his eyes on me as I rinsed out our cups and rifled through the linens cupboard for a spare set of sheets. I found one, and he helped me put them on the sofa, along with a spare pillow and my mom’s quilt.

By the time we settled in for the night, it seemed he had forgotten about my statement. Or at least, he was pretending to have forgotten.

I hoped it wasn’t the latter. Because no matter how much I wanted to tell him about my past life, I wasn’t sure if I could bring myself to take that risk.
