Chapter 421

Dominic’s POV

By the time I made it home, I was dead on my feet. And yet, there was so much to do that I hardly had time to take a thirty-minute nap before I was moving again.

My Beta was waiting for me in my study, and looked up from behind the desk, giving me a curt look.

“You look exhausted.”

“Nice to see you, too,” I muttered. I gestured for him to get up, and he did. Taking my seat, I said, “I need you to start a search for Vivian.”

“Vivian?” His brows shot up. “Why?”

“It’s too much to explain,” I said. “I just need her found and brought back here.”

“But she could be anywhere,” he said. “She became a rogue months ago. She could even be dead.”

“If she is, then you’ll bring me back her corpse,” I said firmly, shuffling through the papers on my desk. “Either way, I need to know where she is, and I need her brought here.”

My Beta still looked a little confused, but nodded. “Yes, Alpha.” He turned to leave, but then paused at the door and added, “Oh, the Alpha King sent out a notice this morning. It’s sitting on your desk.”

With that, he left.

I found the notice in question; it was an invitation to a banquet tonight. At first glance, I thought it was just more campaign logistics, nothing I couldn’t handle. But then I read the invitation more closely and realized that it wasn’t a typical campaign dinner, but that only eligible bachelors and bachelorettes were invited.

Which meant that he really was going through with this whole every-candidate-needs-a-Luna thing.

I sighed, setting the invitation down. The last thing I wanted to do was go to a dinner where I’d be forced to mingle with women I had no intention of marrying, but the invitation said that attendance was mandatory for every unwed candidate, and refusing to attend could result in disqualification from the race.

It seemed I had no choice.

By that evening, I was stuffed into a tuxedo that felt two sizes too small after eating all that junk food on the road, suppressing a yawn behind one hand as I pinched the stem of a champagne flute in the other.

The banquet itself was pleasant enough. The sitting Alpha King had gone all out on the spread, providing a vast array of delicate hors d’oeuvres and drinks that passed by on trays carried by waiters. The banquet hall was packed with men in tuxedos just like mine and women in fine gowns, all mingling, laughing at jokes, flirting behind hand fans.

If I had been a different man, if I hadn’t had the image of one woman in particular stuck in my mind for all eternity, I might have enjoyed myself amongst the crowds of fawning bachelorettes. Goddess knew they were clinging onto me, trying to engage me in conversations that I didn’t care to have. It was a stag Alpha’s feeding ground.

But the thing was, everywhere I looked, I saw her. Ellie. I’d see her face in the smile of a woman I didn’t know, I’d hear her laugh from across the room, I’d see her hair trailing down someone else’s spine.

My mind was made up. If Ellie didn’t want me back, if she didn’t want to give me a chance to repair what had been

broken, then I wasn’t going to remarry. I would accept it if she didn’t want me back. Hell, I understood completely why she might not want me ever again.

But either way, I would never love another woman. I would never take another wife. Not even for a contract. Not even for the title of Alpha King.

The clock struck ten, finally, my cue to leave. I carefully set my untouched champagne on a side table and began to make my way back toward the exit, weaving between giggling women and potential future matches. I figured, if anyone asked where I went, I could come up with an excuse.

The problem was, I only made it halfway across the room before I felt a hand on my shoulder.
