Terence didn’t answer. He looked at me instead.

“It isn’t my decision,” he said quietly.

The Beta stood, dropped to his knees in front of me, and clasped his hands together. “Please…”

I looked away, jaw tightening. This was my chance to make sure history truly didn’t repeat itself. To put Vivian behind bars, once and for all. To find out if she was the one who had me killed in my past life and make sure it didn’t happen again.

When he came back, he tilted his chin up and looked down his nose at me.

“I know,” I muttered, looking away. “I’m ashamed of me, too.”

My father sighed. “Don’t be ashamed. That was far kinder than most would have been. Far kinder than Vivian would be to you. It’s not a weakness to be kind and forgiving.”

He paused, then added a bit softer, “But kindness like that is a thing you cannot always afford. If you mean to take my place one day, you have to learn when to be brutal. The people who want what this pack has will mistake your mercy as weakness, and then we’ll all suffer in the end.”

I blinked. “I didn’t know you actually wanted me as your heir,” I blurted out. “I thought it was just… a gesture.”

“Of course I do. Why would I-” He stopped and sighed. “Oh. So you heard.”
