Chapter 430

Dominic’s POV

The line went dead before I could fully make out what Ellie had said.

“Hello?” I pressed the phone harder to my ear. “Ellie, can you hear me?”

There was only static on the other end. I lowered the phone, rubbing my temple with two fingers. The screen flashed two words: “Signal Lost.”

Dammit. Whatever she had been saying sounded urgent, and I was pretty sure she had said a name.

Vivian.

Or at least, I thought she’d said Vivian. The signal had been bad enough that I couldn’t be certain. But I wasn’t going to sit her idly and wonder if I had heard it at all.

I tried calling back twice. Both times it went straight to voicemail, just as it had been doing since I left Goldenveil. Whatever brief moment of signal she’d apparently had was gone now, likely lost somewhere amongst those snowy mountain peaks.

My mind raced as I finally set the phone down, running a hand through my hair. I stood, walking over to the window, and looked out.

The search thus far had been fruitless. My men hadn’t found any clues pointing to where Vivian might be, if she was even alive at all. They’d been scouring the forests in the region since I sent out the command and came up with nothing.

What if she was in Goldenveil? It seemed terribly unlikely. It was so far away, practically at the edge of the continent. For a woman like Vivian, a rogue no less, a journey like that would have been deadly.

And even if she had made it there, why would she go there? She had no connection to the place.

Not unless… Did she know something about Ellie’s connections to the Lycans?

Either way, if Vivian had somehow found her way there, I didn’t like it. I’d already lost enough sleep over the idea of Vivian loose and unaccounted for. If she was up there, with Ellie, potentially putting Ellie in harm’s way… I needed to put a stop to it.

I woke bright and early the next morning and tried Ellie again, but there was no answer. Alpha Terence couldn’t be reached, either. I resolved to send a letter-to Ellie and Ellie alone, just to be safe, as I still didn’t know Terence well enough to ask about Vivian–which I wrote quickly and sent out with the next courier.

I’d just managed to do that, the courier having left only fifteen minutes prior with the promise of delivering the letter by the end of the week, when my Beta entered my office, bowing sharply at the waist.

“You have a visitor.”

“I don’t have any appointments this morning,” I said, looking up at him from behind my desk.

“She said she was passing through and that you’d know who she was.” A pause. “She’s wearing a veil, Sir.”

I set my pen down. What did Lady Everheart need from me? I had a sinking feeling that this was about last night; perhaps the Alpha King had sent her here to try and convince me to change my mind. Which I wasn’t going to do. If it wasn’t going to be Ellie, then it would be no one. I’d made that decision already.

“Sir?” my Beta asked, pulling me out of my thoughts.

“Send her in,” I said with a sigh. I wasn’t about to send a woman away before at least hearing her out. And besides, I wanted another look at her.

Lady Everheart came through the door a few minutes later. She’d traded the ruby red gown from the banquet for a simpler dress in deep plum, but the veil was the same. She entered, curtsying, then stopped in the middle of the room. I could feel her looking at me through the veil, and that same familiarity washed over me again, only to be quickly clouded out by the perfume.

“I hope I’m not interrupting,” she said in that strange, thick accent.

“Not at all. I was just finishing up.” I gestured to the chair across from my desk. “Sit down. Can I get you anything? Tea?”

“Please.”

I asked a servant to bring it in, then settled back in my chair while she arranged herself across from me, hands folded in her lap. In the daylight from the window, I could see a little more through the fabric than I had at the banquet. Not enough to place features, but enough to know she was watching me very carefully.

“I wanted to apologize,” she said, “if I put you in an uncomfortable position last night. That wasn’t my intention.”
