Chapter 432

Ellie’s POV

In the three weeks that followed after my initial move to Goldenveil, the clinic slowly, finally, stopped feeling like a space I was only borrowing and started feeling like mine.

I’d reorganized the shelves more times than I could count, ordered more supplies that I’d missed from home, and repotted the mysterious dark-leafed plant on the windowsill in my apartment and watched it slowly start to put out new growth. One of the flowers began to bloom, a pretty purple color that opened in the morning sun and closed around midday. I didn’t tell anyone that I still had it. Not after Nico’s allergy attack. But it was too fascinating and pretty, and obviously quite rare, to throw it out.

My daily morning routine had become automatic: open up, put the kettle on, turn the sign in the door, and see who walked in. Most days it was nothing more dramatic than a sore throat or a sprained wrist or the one elderly neighbor who really just wanted someone to talk to. On a couple of occasions, hunters and warriors came in with wounds from hunts and rogue skirmishes gone wrong.

Other than that, it was quiet, aside from Amelia and Nico visiting almost on the daily. They’d become nearly permanent installments in the clinic, fast friends, and I appreciated their company, especially as the days grew colder and the nights longer.

I was getting better at the pack side of things, but mostly, I just enjoyed the time with him. I could tell he enjoyed it, too. We spent much of our time talking since he was often too busy during the week to visit.

As for Stephanie, I saw her around. But she kept her distance. I hoped that was the last of it.

I still hadn’t managed to get through to Dominic. The signal in the ruins stayed patchy, cooperative on its own schedule and nobody else’s. I’d gone up there four more times and only gotten through once, briefly, losing the call before either of us managed to say anything.

I was at the back table in the clinic one day eating lunch with Nico and Amelia when the courier knocked.

“Sign here,” he said, and handed me a slightly battered envelope with my name on it in small, slanted handwriting I recognized immediately.

Nico craned his neck. “Who’s it from?”

“Someone back home.” I turned it over. “I’ll read it later.”

I read it the moment they left.

Dominic had gotten through to someone who knew the mountain roads, confirmed enough of what I’d tried to tell him before the call died. He knew Vivian was here. He’d sent someone north to track her quietly, but the passes had slow
