Chapter 459
My father pulled me into a hug tight enough to nearly knock the breath out of me the moment they were gone.” You were incredibly brave tonight,” he said against the top of my head. “Reckless. Absolutely reckless. But brave.”
For a second, just holding him, I felt him shaking too. It was so faint I almost didn’t feel it, but it was there. My father, the Alpha who had rebuilt this entire pack from nothing and never once let anyone see him rattled, had been standing outside my door tonight, scared for me.
He pulled back to look at me, hands still braced on my shoulders.
“After tonight,” he said, “I think you might be more Alpha material than you think you are.”
“Dad…” I looked away, cheeks flushing.
“You don’t have to make any decisions tonight,” he said. “Just consider it, at least. Consider staying-if not as my heir, then as my apprentice.”
I wanted to say yes. There was a part of me, the little girl who still wanted a dad, the woman who wanted to understand her lineage, that did want that.
But then I thought about home. As in, the real definition of home in my book. And right now, when I looked up and I saw Dominic standing quietly by the sink, watching me, I just couldn’t picture a version of home that didn’t have him in it.
Right now, I had no idea what tomorrow held, let alone the future. I didn’t know if I could see myself staying or leaving, and if I left, where I might even go or what I would want.
But that was the beauty of it. Because once, that liberty to choose my future had been ripped from me in the form of black veins spreading through my skin.
And now the threat was gone, and finally I could breathe, and I felt like I had the whole world ahead of me. There were so many options I didn’t know what to pick. I just knew Dominic had to be there, in some capacity, in all of them–in the same way I knew I needed my father and my brothers and my friends and the healing career that had meant so much from the very beginning.

My knees started to buckle, but Dominic closed the space between us with two long strides and caught me before I hit the floor. He lifted me easily, pushing my skirt up around my hips without even meaning to. I wrapped my legs around his torso, and then our mouths were on each other for the second time that night.
He carried me to the sofa and fell down against the cushions, and I went with him. And for the first time ever, I kissed him without reservations, without fear, and without distance.
