The Luna Queen's Rebirth (Ellie and Dominic) novel Chapter 467

Chapter 467

Ellie’s POV

Amelia’s definition of “small”, as it turned out, was actually really fucking huge.

By the time the sun dipped behind the peaks, the square had been transformed into something completely different. Multiple long tables were arranged in a horseshoe around a bonfire that climbed high into the sky, throwing sparks against the constellations. The lanterns seemed brighter than usual, and somebody had dragged out a fiddle, somebody else a drum, and the smell of roasted meat and honey cakes had drawn out half the village before the fire was even fully lit.

“You said two dozen chairs,” I said flatly as I counted a whole lot more than that.

“I said I needed at least two dozen chairs.” Amelia adjusted the ribbon she’d woven into my braid. “I never said that’s where I would stop.”

There was no point in arguing. Besides, standing there in the firelight with my coat buttoned up to my chin and the whole village trickling into the square, I couldn’t quite manage to be mad about it.

Dominic found me the moment he arrived. He’d traded the campaign clothes for something simpler, a dark sweater and a wool coat, and somehow he looked more like an Alpha in that than he ever had in a suit.

Dinner came first. My father sat at the head of the horseshoe with Dominic and me on his right, Nico and Amelia across from us, and the rest of the pack filling in wherever they pleased. Eli wedged himself into the seat beside mine halfway through the meal, uninvited and entirely welcome, and produced a folded drawing from his coat pocket.

“For your party,” he announced.

It was of the bonfire, more or less. Orange scribbles, stick figures dancing, and off in one corner, a tall spiky shape with a little star drawn above it.

“What’s that part?” I asked, pointing at it.

“The ruins.” He looked at me like I was a bit stupid for even asking. “That’s where the treasure is. Duh.”

Across the table, Nico snorted into his cup. Down at the far end, Bastian suddenly became very interested in his plate.

“Who told you about treasure?” I asked.

“Nobody.” Eli stuffed an entire honey cake into his mouth and said around it, “I heared it.”

I’d danced with him before, of course; at our wedding, that carefully choreographed ballroom dance that was expected of us and not truly wanted.

This was nothing like that. It was fast, a whirlwind of shapes and colors blurring around us as we spun and spun, and the music and the cheers turned to a dull roar, and I was laughing so hard my face hurt.

Dominic’s eyes never left mine, not even once, throughout the entire dance. He led me like he knew the steps by heart, even though we were both making it up as we went. And all the while, he kept his gaze locked on me, his focus entirely narrowed down to the single point of space between us, his lips occasionally slanting over mine for brief kisses between sliding hands and dips and twirled.

It was over too soon with a dramatic dip that had the entire square going up in cheers. Dominic’s nose brushed mine, once, twice, and we were both smiling.

“I guess it’s a good match,” he said, pulling me up. “Do you agree?”
