Chapter 494
Then, I saw the sister cast into a well so deep no one could see the bottom.
My heart stopped. I looked at the fountain. At its endless black depths.
This wasn’t a fountain of youth, was it?
It was a tomb.
This whole mountain. The traps, the tunnels, the riddles, the well-all created to keep the spirit of something trapped inside.
But as I stared into the dark water, I thought about the moments I’d spent in it. I thought about Vivian’s bloated face. And I thought about the warm light that wrapped around me. Gentle arms. A soft, familiar voice.
“My Child of Rejuvenation… I gave you my gift…”
Was it possible that they buried the wrong sister in this well?
Was it possible…
No. I shook my head. It was just water, and the visions I saw were purely machinations of my mind to keep me from drowning. Nothing more.
The water lapped against the opal, calm as glass beyond the churn of the falls. It was beautiful. It was eerie, honestly, the way it took that entire waterfall without ever flowing over the rim. But it was just water. Princesses, tombs, the fountain of youth-stories made up to give this beautiful place meaning.
Right?
Then again…
I looked down at the fruit, still glowing steadily against my chest.
There was plenty about the ancient Lycans I was still learning. Things that shouldn’t have been possible and simply were. The Seeker ability, for one-an invisible thread that could drag me across a mountainside to a plant I’d never laid eyes on. And maybe whatever Nico had done to reach me, dreaming his way into my head, wearing a librarian’s face. The jury was still out on that one.
But the jury had been out on the fountain of youth once, too. And I was kneeling next to it.
So I wouldn’t brush the legend off completely. But now wasn’t the time to ponder. I was still freezing cold and shivering, and I still didn’t hear Dominic or Bastian’s voices calling for me. Survival was more important than legends right now.
I reached for the bond.
I stopped at the threshold and looked back one last time-past the fountain, past the glittering rim and the princess’s story, up into the blackness where the ledge had to be. Where I’d fallen from. Where, somewhere beyond all that rock, my mate and my brother were hopefully tearing the mountain apart to reach me.
“I’m okay,” I whispered. “Come find me.”
I turned to leave,but froze.
For half a second, if that, the bond suddenly flared. Panic. And then it was gone, snuffed out as fast as it had come, leaving the thread dim and quiet as if it had never happened at all.
“Dominic?” I reached for him until my head throbbed, but this time, the bond stayed dark.
Maybe it was him. Maybe it was my concussion. Maybe it was this mountain playing one more game with me. I couldn’t make sense of it, and I couldn’t do anything about it.
So I pushed onward, stepping into the dark corridor with the fruit glowing in my palm.
