Ellie POV

Idiot.

Gods, I was an idiot.

One moment I was frozen in place, listening to Karina’s voice echoing like poison through my skull, and the next I was stumbling backward, vision blurring at the edges, breath coming in uneven, shaky bursts that felt too loud in the quiet hall.

I had survived the humiliation. Survived his constant games, mark on Vivian and maybe even… started to believe he was better. Better than my Dominic. And I had been stupid enough to believe maybe he wasn’t entirely against me. 2

I was walking, insure where I was going when-

“Ellie?”

I flinched so hard I almost dropped my notes. Lucas stood a few feet away, head tilted slightly. He took one step toward me, and I took one back, instinctive, like my body was trying to hold itself together without external interference.

“Hey woah,” he said with a grin. “Hey about earlier, I wanted to apologize. I was just having some fun with the heart beat thing. Besides, you got it! But I shouldn’t have messed with your grades when you-”

He paused, like he finally realized I was shaking.

“Ellie? What happened?” he asked softly.

It all just poured out. “Dominic,” I breathed, the name tasting like smoke. “It’s him. He must have told the girls about me staying that night at the Alpha ball.”

Lucas’s head tilted. “You stayed with Dom?”

“My conduct!” I hissed, “Academic probation! It wasn’t someone else! It was him! He planned it! He’s sabotaging me. I heard him. He and Karina—she said she made sure I’d be expelled… jus like he wanted.”

Lucas’s reaction slowly went from goofy to smile to this icy, cold prince I have never seen. Even I flinched a little. His entire expression sharpened, concern evaporating.

“What?”

But I was fuming from just trying to explain it.

That ass, I hated him. Dominic. I just—I—

My anger had nowhere to go. I was fed up with everything. Something snapped.

I shook my head and pushed past him before he could say another word, my feet already carrying me down the hall in quick, purposeful strides. Rage churned hot in my bloodstream, guiding me more accurately than any map ever could. Every step made my pulse hammer harder, my thoughts sharpen into something jagged.

I followed the scent I normally ran from, my stride long, thunderous.

I reached the intersection of the hall and as soon as I saw his back I barked. “Hey! HEY!”

Dominic turned, his eyes widening at my pace.

“Ellie?” He titled his head, “Why”

My forearm slammed across his throat, pinning him against the wall with a force that shocked even me. His head jerked up, eyes going wide, body tensing beneath my hold as he grabbed my wrist on instinct.

A few girls screamed, other watching wide eyed.

“YOU’RE THE WORST! YOUR DISGUSTING PEST! I HATE YOU! I HATE YOU!,” I hissed, the words dripping with venom I’d been swallowing for far too long. “Don’t you ever talk to me again! You are the worst thing that keeps happenign to me! Go! AWAY!”

Shock flickered across his face, a true, pale face shock. Quickly followed by anger, and then-confusion. Real, disarming confusion all over.

“Ellie…Ellie—what—”

“OH SAVE IT,” I spat, leaning in closer so he could see exactly how much I meant every word. “All you do is lie! Like it’s all some game! I don’t even know what you want! What your stupid goal is from all this other then to torture me! You pretend to care. Pretend you want to help. You don’t get to look at me like I matter while you’re working to actively screw me over behind my back.”

He blinked, jaw flexing. “Ellie, just, hold on. Working to-? What are you talking about-”

“You WANT me to fail,” I said, voice trembling even as I forced it steady. “You wanted me out. Back in the Luna box where you can use me-shape me-control me. You weren’t protecting me, Dominic. You were setting me up! You always are!”

His brows slammed together, his hand moving to my sides, gently pushing me back. “Ellie, stop. I don’t know what your talking about, but I never-”

“Lies!” I snarled. “You-AH!”

He lifted me, straight lifted me into the air with ease by my hips. “Will you calm down!” He said with a light shake. “If you don’t let me explain, I can’t help.”

I gasped, batting at his arms, nearly kicking my legs with no use. “Put me down!” I hissed. “Gods! All you do is lie! I said put me—”

Then footsteps rushed, echoed down the hallway.

Lucas.

I gasped when he was suddenly behind me, his hand on my jeans hook as he forced Dominic to lower me with a gush of wind.

I blinked, shocked, as they stared at eachother like fire over my head.

His presence sliced through the moment like a blade, eyes already burning, expression carved out of fury as
