She was weak, tired, but had enough left to roll her eyes. “Why do you always ask me that like I planned it?”

“I don’t.” I dismissed, standing, “It’s just-I’m taking you back, now. Just hold on to my fur and-”

“No.”

The word is flat. Immediate.

I flashed a look her way. “No?”

She braces her hands against the ground, pushing weakly. Stubborn even now. Gods, she’s infuriating.

“If I accept help,” she says through clenched teeth, “my team loses.”

I stare at her, completely dumbfound. “Ellie it has been hours. Your team already lost.”

“No,” she corrects calmly. “If I walk back we still place. If you carry me, we’re disqualified. You don’t get to carry me back just because-”

“Because you’re injured?” I cut in sharply. “Because you fell into a damn pit and snapped your ankle? Yeah, that kinda means I do.”

Her eyes flash. “I can make it.”

“Hello! Earth to dumb-ass, you can’t! This isn’t a test,” I snap back, fury finally cracking through. “This isn’t a game or some noble stand you get credit for. This is real. And you’re hurt, bleeding!”

She glares up at me, jaw set, pain and pride warring in her expression. “You don’t get to make that choice for me.”

I let out an exasperated growl, doubling back around, hands on my hips. “Why are you like this?! I am trying to save you and your barking at me like I’m the bad guy! Always!” I’m keep you alive!”

She suckd in breath. Pausing. “I don’t always treat you like the bad guy?”

My brow flew up. “There no ways you just said that to me.’

“I don’t!” She yelled as I paced. “Just when your being, like controlling and all Alpha like or telling me what to do!”

“I don’t do that anymore,” I hissed, stopping infront of her.

“What are you doing right now?”

Silence broke the air between us.

I lowered my voice, breathless.

“If saving you today makes me the bad guy in your book, I’m going to do it Ellie. I’m getting you out of here.

Final.”

For a moment, I think she’s going to keep fighting.
