Chapter 124
I look down and gasp. I’m wearing my clothes. They’re perfectly intact, not a single tear from the transformation
“How… how did you do that?” I ask, running my hands over my jeans.
‘I have my ways,’ Wyndra says, her voice retreating back into my mind. Now move. You’re running out of time.”
I stand up, my legs feeling a bit shaky, and walk toward a heavy door at the far end of the grassland. There is a sign on it, written in bold.
dark red letters: SECOND TEST.
I take a deep breath to steady my racing heart and push the door open.
I step inside, and the door clicks shut behind me. The bright mountain light is gone. Everywhere is a dark and red endless space. It’s a massive, empty space that feels like it goes on forever. It’s cold in here, and a scary, hollow feeling settles in my gut.
“Hello?” I call out in a tiny voice.
My voice echoes repeatedly in the empty space. Hello… hello… hello…
I slowly walk forward, but I can hardly see a foot in front of my face. The red haze is too thick.
“Wyndra, I can’t see anything,” I whisper. “You’re going to have to teach me how to use my animal’s sight while I’m like this.”
‘Shut your eyes tight for five seconds,’ she instructs. ‘Focus the heat from your chest into your pupils.’
I do exactly what she says. I count to five, feeling a slight tingle behind my eyelids. When I open them, I gasp. The red haze is still there, but everything is sharp and clear. I can see the textures on the floor and an object in the distance.
“It worked!” I say, feeling a small spark of confidence.
I walk toward the silhouette and find a stone table. There’s a screen embedded in the middle of it. As my fingers touch the glass, it lights up with a white light.
“Welcome to your second test,” a cold, mechanical voice announces. It sounds like it’s coming from everywhere at once.
I lean in, listening closely.
“You must choose amongst those closest to you,” the voice says. “One must go into the bottomless pit. If the person you choose also chooses you, it is automatic death for both.” My blood freezes at that.
“But if whoever you pick does not choose you, you will survive and pass. Choose wisely!” The voice fades into a low hum, then disappears.
