Chapter 166

Kai

The air in the sparring room is thick with the scent of sweat and raw power. I am no longer Kai. It’s Vlad, fighting now. Opposite me, Nero, Damon’s Lycan beast, snarls. His light red eyes is fixed on mine. My own eyes are tinted dark red.

Nero lunges. He’s fast as his muscled fist hits me like a freight train. We collide, and the sound of our impact is shakes the walls. I dig my claws into his shoulders, my teeth bared as we drag for dominance. We are two monsters in a room, and the atmosphere is literally vibrating from the force of our fighting.

He throws a punch that hits me in the ribs, sending a shockwave through my body. But I don’t flinch. Vlad thrives on the pain. It makes him even stronger. I roar and swing my arm, My fist connects with Nero’s jaw, snapping his head back. Before he can recover, I reach out and grab him by the throat and chest and lift him off the ground. He thrashes, his claws scraping against my grip, but am stronger. I’m fueled by a restless energy I can’t name. With a final move, I slam Nero into the stone wall, causing the wall to

crack into pieces.

Nero is down.

Ha ha! I won!Vlad’s voice echoes in my mind, sounding triumphant.

I hold him there for a second longer than necessary, letting his dominance settle in the air. Then as I take over my body, the heat begins to reduce. My fur retreats, my bones snap back into their human form, and the world returns to its normal colors. I stand there, breathing hard, as the transformation completes.

Damon has changed back too and is slumped against the wall, naked and covered in bruises. He looks exhausted. I run a hand through my hair, trying to steady my own racing heart.

You okay?I ask, my voice still rough from the shift.

Damon winces, clutching his side as he slowly slides down to sit on the floor. Apart from the few ribs I’m pretty sure you just turned into dust, I’m great.

I let out a breathless laugh and walk over, extending a hand to him. He takes it, and I pull him to his feet. He groans, leaning his weight against me for a second before finding his balance.

You’re aggressive today, Kai,Damon says, wiping a streak of blood from his lip. He looks at me with a knowing glint in his eyes. Is it because you haven’t seen a certain someone in more than twentyfour hours? The withdrawal is hitting hard, isn’t it?

I know who he means.

You’d better shut the fuck up, Damon.

Damon laughs, then winces as he touches his ribs. The truth hurts as much as that wall did.

Chapter 166

He walks over to a bench and grabs two bottles of water, tossing one to me. I catch it and drain half of it in one go. A sigh escapes

me as the feeling I’ve been avoiding for days hits me.

Ever since I watched her get on that bus three days ago, my head hasn’t been right. I watched her leave, watched her go back to the

Valeria pack, and every instinct I have told me it was a mistake.

I shouldn’t have let her go. I know how they framed her for things she didn’t do. I know they treated her like she was nothing.

But if I had stopped her, if I had kept her here, my father would have noticed. He’s already looking for any excuse to crush her.

Keeping her would have just made her a bigger target.

Damon studies me like he’s reading my mind. What are you thinking about?

I’m worried,I admit in a low voice. I’m worried about what’s happening to her. Her packthey’re cruel. They maltreated her for

years. I feel like I sent her back into a cage.

Damon narrows his eyes at me. He’s been my best friend since we were little so he can read me like a book.

<

Don’t even think about it, Kai. I know that look. You aren’t going anywhere.

But I need to see her, Damon,I say. The desperation in my voice surprises even me. I pushed her away. I treated her like shit to

keep her safe from my father, but I can’t breathe without knowing she’s okay. Vlad is restless. He hasn’t stopped pacing in my head

since she left. We won’t be okay until we see her face.

Damon lets out a long, frustrated sigh. Have you forgotten about Rina? She’s supposed to be your mate, Kai. The King is watching you. If he finds out you slipped away to go see a slavein another pack’s territory, there will be blood. You’re the heir. You have

responsibilities.

I don’t care about the responsibilities. Not right now. All I can think about is how brave Lyra was in that fire. I see her face every time I close my eyes. I see the way she looked at me defiantly. The way she makes me feel is so overwhelming that it scares me. Sometimes I think being away from her would be better, that maybe the distance would dull the ache, but it’s only gotten worse.

We need to see her,Vlad growls in my mind. And we need to mark her. Mate with her. Make her ours so no one can ever touch her

again.’

I’ll see you later,I tell Damon, turning toward the door.

Where the fuck are you going?he calls out.

I ignore him as I exit the sparring room.

Just so you know, I won’t cover for you if the King asks where you are!he yells after me.

I still don’t answer. I don’t need him to cover for me. I just need to get out of here.

Thankfully, the palace is quiet tonight. The King and Queen have retired to their quarters, and the halls are guarded only by the
