Chapter 197
Lyra
“No!”
The word tears from my throat before,my brain can even prosess it. I stumble backward, zipping my hands away from Jackson’s grip. The walls of the
seem to spin around me.
“No! My uncle cannot be gone! You’re lying, Jackson! Tell me you’re lying to me!”
Jackson doesn’t yell back. He just slumps further into the dirt, his shoulders shaking as fresh tears stream down his blood-stained face. “I wouldn’t lie this, Lyra,” he sobs, his voice broken and hollow. “I swear to you, I wouldn’t. I saw him fall. I was standing right there.”
A cold, heavy weight drops into my stomach. I sink to my knees right there in the grass, the ground underneath me feels like it’s swallowing me. The t hit my eyes like a flash flood, hot and blinding. I cover my face with my hands, crying bitterly as reality tries to force its way into my head. I push it a
refuse to let it in.
“I’m so sorry, Ly,” Jackson chokes out, reaching a trembling hand toward me. “I’m so sorry, Lyra. I know how much he meant to you. I… I tried to help but I couldn’t protect him. It all happened so fast. The demons… they drew these dark bows and shot blue arrows straight at Dad.”
I look up through my tears, my chest heaving. “At Dad?”
Jackson nods, wiping his nose with the back of his bloody hand. “Dad didn’t see it coming. He was frozen. But Uncle Cassian… he didn’t even hesitate. H deliberately jumped right in front of the arrows. He took the hit for him, sacrificing his life so Dad could live.”
A sudden spark of fury cuts through me as I stand up, my hands balled into tight fists. “Why!” I yell, my voice echoing around the oasis. “Why the hell
would he do that?! Why would he save the man who doesn’t even deserve it? Why would he leave us?!” I know I sound unfair right now, but I could care
less.
When I feel a hand press gently on my shoulder, I flinch, but I don’t pull away: Kai steps up behind me and answers my question.
“Because he is bound by their bond of Alpha and Beta to protect your father with his life,” His voice is calm, but there is a trail of sadness to it. “That’s it
the way of things in our world, Lyra. The ancient laws of the moon run deep in our blood. There are countless times where Damon almost died trying to
protect me from harm. It isn’t a choice they make in the moment, it is a duty written into their souls. So he was bound to die in your father’s place. I’m
sorry, flower.”
Kai moves around to face me. His fingers reach down and hold my chin gently, tilting my face up so I have to look at him. I look into his dark eyes, and th
moment I see the pity written across his handsome features, something inside me snaps.
Pity. He’s looking at me like I’ve already lost.
I violently slap his hand away, taking three sharp steps back from him. “No! No, my uncle is not freaking dead! I refuse to believe he would do that! He has
his family to think of, Kai! He has his wife! He has me to think of! Why the hell would he just kill himself like that over a stupid pack law?! It makes no
sense!”
Jackson buries his face in his hands, crying even louder now.
“No, so, no,” I mutter, shaking my head frantically as I turn away from them both. “It’s not true. It can’t be true. I need to go back right now. I need to
check for myself. If he’s just injured, I can heal him. My healing ability… I can use it to fix him! I have to try!”

Chapter 197
Turn on my heel and bolt toward the hidden path that leads out of the basis. But I don’t even make it three steps before a pair of powerful arms wra securely around my waist. Kai lifts me completely off my feet, pulling my back flush against his solid chest.
“Let me go!” I scream, kicking my tests wildly in the irr.
“I can’t let you go, Lyra,” Kai says, his voice tightening as he uses his immense strength to fold me down. “If what your brother says is true, you are in extreme danger just by being on these lands. The demons will probably be hunting for you!”
“I don’t give a shit about the demons! Let me go!”
