The Lycan Prince’s Wolfless Slave (Academy Romance)

Chapter 233

“Mate.”

The word hangs in the air as everyone stares at each other. It’s supposed to be a joyous occasion, the greatest moment of joy for any shifter. But as I look at them, the air between them doesn’t feel romantic. It feels cold.

Amara gasps, her hands flying to her mouth as she starts squealing in pure excitement.

“Oh my god! Isolde, are you serious? You found your mate! You were so sure that you thought you’d be mateless/forever, and now look at! This handsome guy is your mate!”

I stay silent and watch Nick and Isolde, waiting for the sparks to fly, for them to hug and kiss, or for them to show the happiness that usually follows a mating revelation.

Isolde takes a shaky step forward with her eyes bright and filled with tears. She looks like she’s about to faint from the intensity of it all. “Are… are you really my mate?” she whispers in a barely audible voice.

Nick stares at her. His expression is unreadable, his blue eyes are lifeless. He doesn’t even smile a bit. He doesn’t reach out. He just looks at her for a long, painful second. Then, without a single word of explanation, he turns his back on her.

“Nick! Wait! I shout, reaching out to grab his sleeve, but he’s already moving with that unnatural speed of his.

“Nick, stop!” I call out again, but he doesn’t even glance back. He just breezes down the hallway, weaving through the groups of students until his tall figure disappears around the corner.

Silence rushes back into the space between us.

“Wait,” Amara says, her excitement dying instantly. “What the hell just happened? Did he… did he just walk away?”

Isolde doesn’t answer immediately. She stands frozen with her arms dropping to her sides as the tears finally spill over her cheeks. She turns to face us andher expression is twisted in pure agony.

“He… he rejected me,” she whispers, her voice cracking. “I saw it in his eyes. He doesn’t want me to be his mate. He doesn’t want me

at all.”

“Isolde, no, that’s not possible,” I say, stepping forward to touch her arm. Maybe he was just shocked. He’s my brother, he’s not-

“He rejected me!” she yells, her voice rising so high that a group of students nearby stops walking to look at us. She starts sobbing, her face turning bright red. “He looked at me and just walked away! What a bastard!”

“Hey, hey, calm down,” I say, pulling her into a hug Shole

freeze. Shit. I could have just kept that quiet. The secret is spilling out faster than I can hold it back.

“Um…Yes,” I mumble, looking at the floor. “He’s my brother. But trust me, I had absolutely no idea until like an hour ago. I still

barely believe it myself. We once met at the library, and we… we bonded over trying to figure out what I am.”

Amara looks at me, then at the direction Nick disappeared. “So, if he’s your brother… does that mean he’s… you know? Not a wolf?

Like you?” she lowers her voice to a whisper.

I sigh, suddenly unable to keep on lying. “Yes. He’s not a wolf.”

My friends stare at me in complete silence. Isolde, who was just sobbing, seems to suddenly lose all the energy in her body. She

shifts back, her eyes going dazed. She looks like she’s going to collapse.

“Oh… oh, Goddess,” she stammers, stumbling back.

“Isolde?” I grab her arm, and Amara grabs the other. We pull her toward a nearby bench and force her to sit down. I start patting her blonde hair while Amara frantically grabs a piece of paper from her notebook and starts fanning her face.

“Isolde, breathe,” Amara says. “What’s wrong?”

Isolde takes in a shaky breath, staring at nothing. “It’s true. What my grandma said… it’s all true.”

“What is true?” I probe her.

Isolde leans forward, her hands trembling as she grips the edge of the bench. “When my grandma was alive, she told me something that I didn’t believe. She told me I’d be mated to someone who wasn’t a wolf. She said he’d be from a powerful, ancient line, and that he would be the only one who could save me and my family from the curse we’ve been under for fifty years.”
