I stare at Kai in shock as he walks forward until he is standing right in front of me. The tension between us is so thick and suffocating

that I can barely swallow. The air in the room feels completely frozen, charged with the volatile energy of his presence and the raw anger

vibrating off my skin.

I take a shaky breath, looking past his broad shoulder at the ruined entryway. “Did you… did you just break down your sister’s door?”

Kai looks down at me, his chest heaving as he tries to regulate his breathing. “Well, you wouldn’t let me come in,” he replies in a deep

and rough voice. “So I had to break down the door. I’m sorry if I scared you, flower.” He adds.

Hearing his apology doesn’t make the burning jealousy in my chest disappear. I immediately try to take a step back, wanting to put some

distance between us, but he doesn’t let me move away. Before I can even turn, his large hands shoot out and grab my shoulders, firmly

pulling my body into his hard chest.

The moment our bodies collide, a violent wave of heat crashes through me. My skin prickles, and my breath catches in my throat because

of the closeness between us. The proximity makes me freeze as the vivid memories of the night before suddenly swarm my brain, I

remember the weight of him on me. I recall how his skilled hands touched my body, how his mouth completely ate me up until I was screaming into the dark. But then I also remember the exact moment I came downstairs and saw him out there with that girl, whoever she

is, holding onto his waist like she owned him.

The pain cuts deep even as I try to ignore it. It’s important. I push against his chest, glaring up at him. “Let me go, Kai.”

Kai grips my shoulders a little tighter, his green eyes boring into mine. “Will you listen to me if I do?”

I glare at him for a long, silent moment, heart hammering violently in my ribs. Realizing he won’t budge until he says his piece, I let out

an exhausted breath. “Okay. I’ll listen. Just… let me go.”

Kai finally releases his grip on my shoulders. I instantly take a step back, crossing my arms defensively over my chest. Kai lets out a long breath, running a hand through his dark hair as he stands in the center of the room.

He takes a step closer and begins to explain everything that happened out there with the strange girl. He speaks quickly, his voice urgent as explains. He tells me that the girl said her name is Marine and that she is a new transfer student from Ravenwood Academy, another shifter academy. He tells me how he stepped out of the elevator and accidentally knocked her down because she was standing too close to the doors. But the moment Kai mentions that he felt a sudden, weird spark when his bare skin touched hers, I pause in shock.

“No. I don’t think the girl is my mate, Lyra. I just… I don’t understand what she is or why I felt that way around her. It felt wrong. It felt

cold.”

I feel my hands begin to tremble uncontrollably. His explanation does nothing to soothe the ache in my chest. “So…this means that I’m

not your mate, right!” I yell, my voice cracking as the reality crashes over me. “Your real mate is someone else? You just kept me around

because of a lie!”

Tears begin to stream down my face before I can even try to stop them. The thought of him belonging to someone else makes me feel like

I am dying from the inside out.

Kai’s eyes widen with panic when he sees my tears. He immediately steps forward and grabs back into his arms, pulling me flush against his chest. He reaches up and gently cleans the wet tears from my cheeks with his thumbs.

“Hey, hey, that’s not fucking possible, flower,” he growls, his voice deep and fiercely possessive. “Don’t you ever say that again. You’re my mate and I’m yours. Okay?”

He chuckles softly. “Even Vlad is extremely angry right now that you dared to suggest you’re not my mate.”

I blink through the blur of my tears, looking up at him in confusion. “Who is Vlad?”

“Right. Your lost memories also affects him.” A faint smile touches Kai’s lips, though his eyes are still burning with a heavy intensity. “Vlad is my Lycan beast. You know, like you have your fox.”

I stare at him, my mind scrambling. “And your Lycan thinks I’m your mate? What if he’s wrong, Kai? What if everything we felt last night isn’t a bond at all? What if what we feel is just… a normal human attraction?”

The moment the words leave my mouth, the softness vanishes from Kai’s face. He glares at me so hard that I look away, feeling completely intimidated by his sheer power.

“I was just..”

Before I can even finish my sentence, Kai suddenly grabs my neck in a tight, unyielding grip. It isn’t tight enough to cut off my air supply, but it is firm and possessive enough that the sudden rush of power makes my head spin until I’m feeling lightheaded beneath his stare.

“First of all, are we humans?” Kai growls, his voice a low, vibrating rumble against my skin. I shake my head silently. “Secondly…”

He doesn’t finish the sentence. Instead, he suddenly slips his free hand straight under the hem of my clothes, sliding his palm up my thigh until his fingers brush firmly against my swollen, wet core.

I let out a loud, involuntary gasp, my hips jerking against his touch. “Kai…”
