A suffocating silence drops over the room as my face burns with a mortifying heat.

Nick’s furious words are still ringing loudly in the air, bouncing off the sterile white walls. I dig my fingers into Kai’s bare shoulders, dragging the thin white sheet all the way up to my nose as I bury my burning face straight into his hard chest. The blankets are rumpled

around our legs, and Kai is still hovering directly over me, his frame pinning me to the mattress with his pants half-unbuckled.

“Relax, Nicko,” Kara says, her shoulders shaking as she points at us. “We are the ones on the wrong. We should have given them time to

fuck themselves before checking on Lyra.”

Nick glares at a laughingKara as if he wants to strangle her. Then he turns towards me and Kai “Get the fuck off my sister right now!” He

screams, voice cracking with a terrifying rage.

He rushes straight toward the bed, his fists clenched, like he’s ready to throw hands. But he doesn’t get too close. Damon and Kara instantly step forward, intercepting Nick before he can even reach the edge of the mattress.

Damon wraps his arms tightly around Nick’s waist, dragging him backward by force, while Kara pushes her hands against Nick’s chest to

hold him back.

“Nick, are you stupid? You want to fight a Lycan?!” Damon yells at Nick as he struggles to get free from himself

“Yes! I will kill hun if I have to! He’s taking advantage of Lyra and you all keep turning a blind eye to it!”

“Look at them Nick. They just marked each other! Of course they’ll be experiencing the mating heat which is why we saw them like that.” Damon, the ever so sweet and matured guy tries to explain.

“I don’t give a shit about a mating mark!” Nick yells, kicking uselessly against the floor as he tries to break free. “He was supposed to be watching over her while she was sick! Instead, I walk in and he’s trying to force himself on my unconscious sister!”

A deep growl vibrates through the room as Kai slowly rises from the bed. He stands tall, his massive frame completely blocking me from their view as he steps between Nick and Damon. His green eyes instantly bleed into a full-blown red as Vlad pushes to the surface and I know that his Lycan is seconds away from bursting out. If he does, he could kill Nick.

“Kai… please..” I say in a shaky voice, sitting up. Thankfully, Kai’s partial shifting stops, meaning Vlad heard me and calmed down. I don’t know why but that makes me excited. But I don’t smile because of the tense situation right now.

“I’m going to be calm just because Lyra is here and all that violence is not good for her health.” Kai’s voice comes out calm as he stares Nick down. They’re almost the same height, but with Kai’s build, he easily towers over Nick.

“But you better watch your fucking mouth, fox boy. She is my mate. I have permanently marked her, she is completely mine, and absolutely no one in this world can change that! Not even a long-lost brother who just showed up out of nowhere. Do you understand?”

The dominance in Kai’s tone makes the entire room freeze. Nick stops thrashing, his chest heaving up and down in furious pants as he

glares at Kai through his lashes. The explosive tension is thick enough to suffocate all of us.

I take a deep breath, trying to steady my racing heart, and push the sheets down. “Nick, can you please just stop fighting with him all the

time?”

Nick’s gaze snaps past Kai’s shoulder to me and his eyes wide with a heavy mixture of betrayal and disbelief.

“Are you seriously defending this brute, Lyra? After everything this royal family put you through? He took advantage of you while your

mind was broken!”

“He didn’t take advantage of anything!” I snap back, my voice completely clear and steady as I push myself up against the pillows. “My memories ar Nick. The block in my head shattered when he marked me. I remember everything now. I know exactly who Kai is, I know what through, and I know what we share. This mark… this is exactly what I wanted. It is my choice.”

drops over the room.. Nick stares at me for a long, quiet moment, his fingers trembling against his sides as the blinding slowly transforms into a cold, bitter hurt. He shakes his arms violently, freeing himself from Damon’s loosened grip, and rumpled jacket with a sharp jerk.

spits out, his tone dripping with bitterness. “If you want to willingly bind your soul to a monster who treated you like I won’t stand in your way anymore. But don’t come crying to me when this royal ass decides to crush you again.”

He turns on his heel and storms out, slamming the door shut behind him.

Long, trembling sigh escapes my lips as a crushing weight slightly lifts from my chest. Kai turns to me and I see the red eyes fading ck into their usual dark green.

“Are you okay?”Kai asks, sitting on the edge of the mattress as he places a warm hand over my knee. I nod with a faint smile. I know I need to talk to Nick. A warped part of him believes that Kai is the enemy. I don’t blame him because of how terrible Kai’s father is, but he needs to stop attacking Kai for every little thing.

I… think I’ll step away for a little while, Kai says softly, his deep voice dropping into a quiet whisper. “Damon and I have some very Important things we need to take care of immediately regarding the break-in. Will you be okay here with the girls?”

He’s leaving me with this unbearable heat? I reach out and wrap my fingers around his wrist, hating the idea of him walking out that door right after we just reconnected. “Um… do you have to go right now? Can’t it wait a few hours?”

“It can’t, baby,” Kai murmurs softly as he leans down to press a lingering kiss against my forehead. “I avoided the issue because I couldn’t leave your side. But I’ll be back before you know it. I promise.”

I slowly loosen my grip on his wrist, letting my hand fall back onto the sheets. “Okay. Just… please be careful.”
