Evelyn slowly lifted her head from his shoulder.
Her eyes met his, a mix of confusion and mild panic flickering in them.
"Axel... we’re heading to your office?" she asked carefully, almost dreading his answer.
Axel didn’t rush to answer her. He chuckled under his breath, brushing a few strands of hair away from her face and tucking them neatly behind her ear.
His touch was tender, but there was something deeper in his gaze, warmth shadowed with exhaustion.
"Hm-mm," he hummed with a soft smile. "You heard me right. We’re heading to my office. I still have a meeting waiting."
Evelyn’s eyes widened in shock. Before she could say anything, he kept talking.
"My directors from all over the country were probably wondering if the earth swallowed me, because I suddenly disappeared from the meeting room."
Evelyn’s mouth fell open. "Wait... what? You left an international board meeting to come after me?"
"No, not really like that. More like paused it for some personal errand," he corrected casually, as if rescuing his wife from her violent father was an ordinary part of his schedule.
Her heart swelled at his words. This man would drop everything—his empire, his reputation, a table full of powerful and influential executives—just for her!?
The warmth in her chest grew so fast it almost hurt.
"Why are you staring at me like that?" he teased, tracing his thumb over her lips.
Before she could answer, he leaned in and kissed her, firmly, deeply. His lips moved against hers with a deliberate gentleness that made her whole body melt into him.
He only pulled away when she gasped for air, her cheeks flushed and her eyes wide in shock.
"Are you afraid to visit my office?" he asked in a low voice.
Evelyn blinked, her mind still foggy from the kiss. After a few seconds, gasping for air, she finally managed to speak.
"No... It’s not that," she paused to take another breath, "It’s just... I need to buy something. I already promised Oliver and—" She stopped herself.
She scolded herself silently because she had nearly spoiled the surprise Oliver and she had planned for Axel’s birthday.
"Promised him what?" Axel asked, clearly curious. His eyes narrowed slightly as he stared at her.
"I just need something for Oliver. And, something for me..." she explained quickly, waving her hand as if it was nothing important.
He raised an eyebrow, unconvinced, but his voice stayed calm. "If that’s the case, I’ll handle it. Just pick what you want online. I’ll have someone deliver it to my office."
Evelyn hesitated. "But—"
"No ’but’," Axel interrupted with a smile. "You’re not running around in that condition. Choose what you want; I’ll take care of the rest."
Her lips parted in protest, but she knew better than to argue when he used that tone. So she nodded. "Alright," she said reluctantly. "Online shopping it is."
Axel smiled happily. "Good girl."
Evelyn rolled her eyes but smiled anyway. She didn’t want to push her luck. The less she argued, the safer her secret birthday plan would remain.
...
As the car neared Apex Tower. The massive glass skyscraper that bore Axel’s company logo made her heart start pounding faster.
The building shimmered under the sun, tall enough to pierce the clouds.
This was it—the infamous fortress of Apex Holdings.
Evelyn swallowed hard.
She had never set foot inside before, and now she was arriving as the CEO’s secret wife. The thought alone made her palms sweat.
She had barely taken five steps before her ankle twisted slightly. The pain shot up her leg, and she winced.
Axel turned immediately, his brows pulling together. "What’s wrong?"
"My feet," she muttered, glaring down at her high heels like they were enemies. "They’re... killing me."
Without a word, Axel crouched slightly, offering his back.
Evelyn froze. "What are you doing?"
"Carrying you," he said calmly, "Get on."
Her eyes widened. "Axel, we’re in your office building! What if someone sees us?"
He turned his head, giving her that deadly calm look. "And?"
"And... people will talk!"
"They won’t," he said simply. "Trust me, they won’t or they’ll lose their jobs."
Evelyn was speechless. She hesitated for another second before giving up.
"Fine. But if someone takes a photo when you carry me?"
"Then they will lose their lives if they dare to post it," Axel said lightly, lifting her off the ground before she could finish.
"Axel!" she squeaked, hitting his shoulder softly.
He chuckled without a sound. "I always forgot that you’re lighter than you look."
"Put me down before your employees think their boss has lost his mind."
