"Yes, but by boat."
The buzz-cut man sighed with a hint of disappointment. "The boat is indeed the better option. You can get on the boat from your country, and it will take about a month. Damn, the road option is so hard! It's like hell! I thought I would die at some point."
Someone in the crowd muttered, "Bullshit. Taking a boat is not as good as you think. You were at least walking on earth. If you took a boat, you might have to swim the last stretch. There were about 60 people on the same boat, but only half of us got ashore. I bet the other half were swept away by waves."
The buzz-cut man shuddered slightly and lamented, "Anyway, I'm freaking regretting this. They said that America is a paradise. Fuck them! It's nothing but hell! The fucking agent told me that I could make at least seven to eight thousand dollars a month even if I just washed dishes. When I got here, at least a dozen people fought to wash one plate in a restaurant!"
After that, he turned to look at Charlie and continued, "Bro, you asked me why I didn't go to LA, right? I did! That was the first place I went. After crossing the Mexican border, we headed straight to LA, but when we got there, we realized that the high pay was nothing but the agents' bullshit! I slept on the street for two weeks and got free food at the food bank. The food was never enough to make me full. Then, some bugger stole my tent. I told you that, right? A buddy said that LA was too crowded and suggested to come to New York."
"The West Coast is so far from the East Coast." Charlie asked curiously, "How did you get here?"
"We got here by hopping on trains." The buzz-cut man chuckled. "It was so far. Fortunately, there were a few homeless Americans there who hopped on trains all day long. We followed them all the way to New York. I almost lost my hand on the way!"
The man cleared his throat and continued, "When I got here, I was impressed. New York is so big and lively. I bet there must be a place to make a living, and I was right! I went to Oskiatown and got myself a job, delivering takeout for a restaurant, but I didn't have a car. I couldn't just walk to deliver food, right? So I stole a bike, and that's how I ended up here."
Charlie smiled and asked, "What do you plan to do next?"
"I don't know." The man shrugged. "My case is not serious enough to throw me in jail. Let me tell you, American jails are packed like sardines. Foreigners, thieves, you name it. They will most probably release me in a few days. Actually, I hope that they can send me back, but they don't even give a damn. I have to sleep on the street when I get out... If I had known this is what America is like, I would never have come here!"
