The Man Who Waited vs. The Man Who Wasted novel Chapter 128

"It's fine," Jocelyn replied coldly. "It's not like the Lowell family wrongly accusing me is a rare occurrence."

Adrian paused.

"Where are you? I'll come pick you up."

"Pick me up for what?" she snapped. "To go to the courthouse for a divorce?"

Adrian remained unusually patient.

"I only said that last night because I was angry."

"But I felt like you meant it. It's pretty obvious you want a divorce."

"If I wanted to divorce you, I would have done it a long time ago. Why would I wait until now?"

Jocelyn was momentarily speechless.

He had a point.

But Jocelyn knew full well that Adrian's reason for avoiding divorce had absolutely nothing to do with love.

It was because she made a fantastic prop. She was the perfect shield to cover up his shameless desire for his brother's widow.

When Jocelyn didn't answer, Adrian spoke again.

"What do I have to do to make you believe me?"

Calculating the perfect timing, Jocelyn let out a long, heavy sigh.

"Adrian, I know Grandma and Mom don't like me. Aside from the fact that I can't give you a child, it's also because I just sit around the house all day doing nothing."

"Adrian, why don't I come work at your company?"

Adrian almost laughed.

"What exactly could you do at my company?"

"Don't forget, I graduated from Northwood University. I can definitely handle something."

"And over the years, for your sake, I actually went out of my way to study computer science. I'm not totally clueless about the industry anymore. Maybe I could actually be of some help to you."

Adrian thought about it for a long time without saying a word.

But internally, he was already swaying.

Jocelyn struck while the iron was hot.

"I'll handle Grandma and Mom," Adrian assured her. "You don't need to worry about it."

"Won't that put you in a tough spot? If it's too difficult, let's just drop it. I don't want to put you in the middle."

Adrian laughed.

"I honestly thought after yesterday, you wouldn't care about me anymore."

Jocelyn rolled her eyes invisibly. "How could I not? We're still husband and wife, after all."

Adrian's tone grew serious.

"Jo, don't worry. I will never divorce you."

"I know," Jocelyn lied effortlessly.

Adrian abruptly changed the subject.

"Yesterday, Commissioner Davis mentioned your dad. Are they really close?"

Jocelyn sneered internally.

So that was what this was really about...
