The Man Who Waited vs. The Man Who Wasted novel Chapter 279

He was beginning to question the very foundation of his feelings.

Back then, when he had been so obsessed with having Audrey, was it really because he loved her?

Or was it just because someone had snatched his favorite toy, and his ego and competitive nature had demanded he win it back?

Audrey walked out of the bedroom.

Eleanor smiled warmly. "Did you hear all of that?"

Audrey leaned affectionately against Eleanor, acting like a sweet, spoiled child.

"Mhm. I heard everything."

"Are you relieved now?"

"I am."

Eleanor patted her hand, looking as doting as if Audrey were her own flesh and blood.

"Silly girl. You can't let your imagination run wild like that anymore. You are Adrian's true love, and you are the greatest asset to the Lowell family. How could he possibly change his mind about you?"

Audrey pouted playfully.

"I just felt like Adrian was being a little cold lately, so I thought..."

Eleanor reassured her, "That's just because he's under an immense amount of pressure at work. He's dealing with the new manufacturing plants, and on top of that, he's facing intense industry competition from that Julian Vance."

"The stress has to be getting to him. You need to be understanding and put yourself in his shoes, alright?"

Audrey put on a sickly-sweet voice. "I know, Grandma. It's my fault. I shouldn't have been overthinking things."

It was a picture-perfect scene of family harmony.

"Audrey," Eleanor promised, "Grandma gives you her word. The second those divorce papers are official, I will make Adrian marry you."

But Audrey still looked a little anxious.

"Grandma, what if Adrian regrets the divorce?"

Eleanor's brow furrowed sharply.

"He won't have the chance to regret it. I've already pulled some strings. Their divorce application is going to be expedited. The moment it clears, the final certificate will be issued immediately."

Audrey threw her arms around Eleanor, practically bursting with joy.

"Thank you, Grandma! You are so good to me. Don't worry, I will talk to my dad. I'll make sure he finds a way to get your beauty clinic reopened as soon as possible."

Outside the door, Adrian's hand was gripped so tightly around the doorknob that his knuckles were white.

Heh.

If he hadn't forgotten something and turned back, he never would have heard such a brilliant conversation.

So it wasn't just him.

Everyone was scheming.

Everyone had their own hidden agenda.

Thinking back on it now, over the past three years, the only person who had stood by his side without any ulterior motives, who had never plotted against him, was his wife.

And now, they were walking down separate paths.
