The Man Who Waited vs. The Man Who Wasted novel Chapter 290

At the police precinct.

A young punk decked out in designer clothes was slouched in a chair, answering the officers' questions with a bored, indifferent attitude.

The front desk officer quietly pointed him out to Jocelyn as the man who had killed her mother.

On a nearby table lay a stack of photos taken at the crime scene.

Jocelyn's eyes skimmed over them, stopping dead on a close-up of the vehicle and its license plate.

She knew that plate.

It belonged to Claire Lowell.

That red Ferrari was the extravagant birthday gift Adrian had bought for her.

But last year, Claire had racked up so many traffic violations that her license was permanently revoked. That car was supposed to be collecting dust in the Lowell estate garage.

What the hell was it doing out on the street?

Instinctively, Jocelyn scanned the room.

In a dim corner of the precinct, she spotted Claire.

It was freezing outside, but Claire was dressed for a nightclub—a crop top, a leather mini skirt, and leather boots, her bare legs exposed to the cold.

Claire had seen Jocelyn walk in and had been too terrified to say a word.

The police had already informed her who the victim was.

Claire couldn't believe her rotten luck.

Of all the people in the city to hit, why did it have to be this bitch's mother?

And wait, wasn't Diana Evans her mother?

Where did this new mother even come from?

Jocelyn walked straight toward her, staring coldly down at the trembling girl. "You were driving, weren't you?"

Jocelyn didn't even know what possessed her to ask, but every instinct in her body screamed that this wasn't a simple drunk driving accident.

She remembered that even after Claire had lost her license, she used to sneak cars out of the garage.

It was only after Adrian found out and completely lost his temper that she temporarily stopped.

Despite her obvious terror, Claire's defense mechanisms kicked in, and she snapped back defensively.

"What the hell are you talking about?! I was just in the passenger seat! This has absolutely nothing to do with me!"

Jocelyn towered over her, her gaze lethal.

"Do you even know who the woman you hit was?"

Claire stared at the floor, refusing to answer.
