The Man Who Waited vs. The Man Who Wasted novel Chapter 292

The woman on the bed tossed and turned, trapped in a relentless nightmare, constantly kicking off the covers.

Her hands flailed, as if desperately trying to fend something off.

The man who had been keeping vigil beside the bed had no choice but to keep getting up to tuck her back in.

This time, however, she suddenly grabbed onto his shirt.

She mumbled in her sleep.

"Mom, where are you going?"

Julian frowned, a profound ache tightening his chest.

He gently pulled her hand away and enveloped it in his own. Slipping off his shoes, he reclined beside her on the bed, lightly patting her through the blanket.

Slowly, her restless movements ceased, and she finally quieted down.

Sleep.

Just get some good sleep.

In the middle of the night, Jocelyn woke up.

Taking in the cozy, fairytale-like room, her mind immediately went to the family members she had lost back-to-back. Her chest seized up, making every breath hurt.

Her hand was engulfed in someone's grasp. It felt so warm.

It was him.

Julian was half-sitting on the bed, asleep as he leaned against the headboard.

He had to be completely exhausted.

He must have been holding that uncomfortable position for hours.

It had to be agonizing...

None of this had anything to do with him, yet he always got dragged into her mess.

Jocelyn, oh, Jocelyn, she thought. Are you really exactly what Michelle called you? Are you really a jinx?

Anyone who got too close to her seemed destined for misery.

Jocelyn reached out with her free hand, wanting to smooth the crease between his brows.

But in the end, she pulled her hand back.

Then, she gently slipped her other hand out of his grip.

Her movements were incredibly slight, but it was enough to wake him.

Julian opened his eyes. Having stayed in one position for so long, his lower back was screaming in protest.

He shifted with a slight frown, his low, raspy voice carrying an undeniable magnetism.

"Why are you awake? Did you have another nightmare?"

Jocelyn opened her mouth, but her throat felt raw and painful.

Julian unscrewed the thermos he had kept at the ready.

"It's honey water. It's not too sweet, but it'll soothe your throat."

Jocelyn sat up and took a couple of sips, immediately feeling some relief.
