She remembered that she was supposed to have dinner at her godparents' house tonight.
Today was Penelope Sterling's birthday.
She had already prepared a gift.
But she also wanted to pick up some fresh flowers and a cake on the way.
After freshening up, she opened her bedroom door and stepped out.
Maria had already made breakfast.
The spread was hearty, and Jocelyn's appetite had returned in full force. She ate quite a bit.
Maria watched her with a delighted smile.
"Miss Jocelyn, if you keep eating this well every day, you're definitely going to have a big, healthy baby boy."
Jocelyn rubbed her stomach affectionately.
"I think I'd prefer a girl."
"A girl would be wonderful! If she looks just like you, she'll be absolutely gorgeous. Everyone will adore her."
Unbidden, her thoughts drifted to the baby's biological father.
Whether the baby took after her or him, the kid was bound to be good-looking.
"Maria, could you pack up a little of the leftover breakfast? I'm going to take it with me."
"Are you bringing it to that bodyguard Mr. Vance sent over?"
"Yeah," she replied.
"I have to say, Mr. Vance is treating you incredibly well. If you had married him instead of Adrian, I bet you'd be so happy right now."
Jocelyn's hand paused midway to her mouth.
There were no 'what-ifs' in life...
"You know, Miss," Maria teased playfully, "I can't put my finger on it, but the more I look at you and Mr. Vance, the more I think you two look like a perfect match."
Jocelyn's tone turned a bit more serious.
"Maria, please don't say things like that anymore. He has a fiancée."
"There's no one else around, I'm just speaking my mind. I just think it's a shame, that's all."
She finished the last sip of her milk.
A soft smile touched her lips.
"It's not a shame. I'm doing great right now. Better than I ever have. I get to do what I love every day, and I never have to walk on eggshells or beg for anyone's approval ever again."
It was perfect.
She walked out the door.
The bodyguard was already waiting by her car.
