Their eyes locked, an unspoken current surging between them.
Both of them quickly looked away.
Kyle stared straight ahead, pretending to be invisible.
"Boss, I'm going to step outside for a smoke."
Julian: "Yeah, go ahead."
Jocelyn watched Kyle walk out the door.
"I've never seen him smile."
Julian: "I haven't either."
Jocelyn looked astonished.
"I just assumed he didn't like smiling in front of strangers. You've never seen him smile either?"
Julian: "No. Ethan always says he's an old soul trapped in a young body."
Jocelyn remembered something and let out a light laugh.
"I think Ethan used those exact words to describe you once."
Julian: "I'm already old."
Jocelyn smiled.
"If you're old, then so am I. I'm only two years younger than you."
Meeting her bright, smiling face, Julian's expression softened into a grin.
"Penelope mentioned you gave her a robot dog."
"Yeah, it was modeled after the one showcased at The National Tech Showcase last year. I built a replica in my free time, but I coded some custom upgrades into it."
"I broke down complex tasks into multiple micro-tasks for it to process. It's equipped with cameras, radar, and microphones, so it can stream real-time visual and audio data directly to a backend multi-modal AI model. The model analyzes the environment, recognizes objects, and makes decisions on the spot."
Whenever she discussed the field she excelled in, Jocelyn radiated an undeniable pride and glowing confidence in her work.
"It can even recognize traffic lights—knowing to stop on red and walk on green. It understands human commands and can have basic, interactive conversations. Oh! Right..."
Jocelyn suddenly grew animated.
"I also want to develop a rescue-oriented robot dog."
One that wouldn't be affected by toxic gases or dense smoke, capable of crawling into collapsed rubble and hauling a water hose to extinguish flames.
"Instead of sending firefighters into the most lethal zones of a burning building, we could send the robot dog. They can transmit real-time footage, heat signatures, and toxicity levels straight to command centers, buying firefighters a golden window for rescue operations."
