Julian's expression remained perfectly composed, as if he were recounting the most trivial detail in the world.
"When we were at Aurelia, you ate several pieces of the Honey-Glazed Short Ribs. Later, Sarah mentioned you loved the Braised Short Ribs from that one spot, so I just figured you were a big fan of ribs in general."
Aurelia. Honey-Glazed Short Ribs.
Braised Short Ribs.
Jocelyn had completely forgotten about those passing moments herself.
Yet he remembered them with crystal clarity.
"So... you learned how to make ribs from Penelope? For... me?"
Jocelyn's grip on her fork suddenly tightened.
She felt a strange flutter of panic at the thought of him saying 'yes.'
Julian offered a casual smile.
"I never actually told you this, but I'm a huge fan of ribs myself. I took some of those Braised Short Ribs home last time. They were decent, but they didn't quite hold a candle to Penelope's recipe. And I couldn't exactly ask her to cook for me every time I had a craving."
"Teach a man to fish, right? I figured it was easier to just learn the recipe so I could make it myself whenever I wanted."
It was a perfectly logical explanation.
Not a single hole in his story.
Jocelyn silently breathed a sigh of relief.
It seemed she was just overthinking things.
After dinner, Penelope tried to wash the dishes.
Jocelyn refused to let her.
Jocelyn tried to wash the dishes.
Julian refused to let her.
In the end, Julian was the one stuck doing the manual labor.
Jocelyn walked Penelope back to her bedroom to rest.
The two of them stayed up chatting for a while.
As Penelope studied Jocelyn's face, a look of familiarity washed over her.
Jocelyn touched her own cheek self-consciously.
"Is there something on my face?"
"I was just thinking that your features look remarkably like someone I used to know."
"Who?"
