The police had called Adrian Lowell to inform him that Claire Lowell had collapsed from a hunger strike while in custody. She was currently at the hospital, and they requested he come immediately.
Tomorrow was the day she would officially face charges.
Adrian arrived at the hospital.
The Hospital Guard was stationed outside her room.
"Her mental state has been extremely unstable these past few days," the guard advised, his tone serious. "You really need to talk some sense into her. Making a mistake isn't the end of the world, as long as she's willing to face the consequences. She's too young to just give up on life like this."
Adrian pushed the door open, immediately spotting Claire lying in the hospital bed on an IV drip.
Her hair was a greasy, tangled mess, her skin an alarming shade of white, and her lips were cracked and peeling.
Adrian almost didn't recognize her.
The girl who used to stare at herself in the mirror a dozen times a day, obsessing over her looks and hair, had been reduced to a ghost of herself.
A bitter taste settled in Adrian's mouth.
After all, they had grown up together.
And she had called him her brother for over twenty years.
Hearing the door, Claire slowly opened her eyes.
They were completely bloodshot and devoid of any light, like stagnant water.
She didn't call him "Adrian." Instead, she simply rasped, "You came."
Her entire demeanor and voice had shifted; it was as if she were a completely different person.
Adrian gave a curt nod and pulled a chair up beside her bed, sitting in heavy silence before finally forcing the words out.
"Why are you doing this to yourself?"
A single tear slipped from the corner of Claire's eye, soaking into the pillow.
"I hate it in there. I want to get out. I want to go home. But I know I can't."
Adrian crossed his legs, resting a hand on his knee, his eyes dark with conflict.
"Even so, throwing a tantrum won't fix it. Why stop eating?"
Claire slowly turned her head, fixing her deadened gaze straight onto him. "Why did you replace my lawyer?"
