When Jocelyn saw the response, she stared at it. It was incredibly official. Almost distant. But for her, this was exactly what they needed. Maintaining a simple, professional relationship was more than enough.

She had contacted the caregiving agency, but they couldn't send anyone until the next day. That meant Nina would be completely alone in the hospital tonight. Jocelyn couldn't bear the thought of leaving her, especially given the girl's fragile emotional state. She made the decision to stay.

Jocelyn called Maria. Since she couldn't hide it anymore, she revealed Nina's true identity.

Maria's voice pitched up in panic. "No! Miss Jocelyn, absolutely not! That's the kidnapper's daughter! How could you take care of her?"

Jocelyn patiently tried to calm her down. "Nina is only thirteen, and she has a severe heart condition. If I don't help her, she really will die. Maria, could you honestly watch a child that young just die?"

Maria had a kind heart. Of course, she didn't want the girl to die. "I'm worried about you! You're pregnant! How can you pull all-nighters at the hospital? What if something happens to the baby?"

"Don't worry, Nina is incredibly well-behaved. It's a private room, and there's a comfortable sofa I can sleep on."

"Absolutely not!" Maria had long since viewed Jocelyn as her own daughter and flat-out refused. "If you weren't pregnant, we could negotiate. But you're in your first trimester! Have you forgotten the spotting scare? If you keep pushing yourself like this, I'm going to pack my bags and go back to my old house! I won't watch you do this to yourself!"
