The Mercenary Queen Strikes Back (Lily Hastings) novel Chapter 72

Chapter 72

Chapter 72

“Henry!” Seeing his friend suddenly drop to his knees, the usually arrogant Arthur was startled.

Even Arthur was shocked, let alone the other family members present.

They stared in disbelief, thinking, “This expert, stronger than Arthur… knelt in Nova’s direction? The daughter of Charles, that loser?’

They couldn’t believe this scene.

Henry Brown, now kneeling on the ground, trembled as he looked at Nova.

The moment he saw her, he was reminded of someone-the queen of the battlefield, who commanded a inercenary corps and became a living legend.

A low-level mercenary like Henry had no right to approach such a figure. The only time he had seen Nova was a distant glimpse of her back.

That single glance had instilled in Henry a bone-deep awe and fear, which was why he dropped to his knees involuntarily upon seeing Nova’s striking resemblance to that legend.

Henry thought, ‘So similar… The resemblance is almost uncanny. I actually mistook her for that formidable presence.

But then he shook his head and reassured himself inwardly, ‘Someone that terrifying, who could change the international underworld with a single move, couldn’t appear in a place like this. It’s impossible.

“N-nothing, I just slipped,” Henry said, forcing himself to stand though his legs still shook.

Someone laughed, “Even experts slip sometimes.”

“That scared me. I thought he was kneeling to that loser’s daughter.”

The main family members laughed, their mockery echoing around the field.

Arthur kept his eyes fixed on Nova, alerted by Henry’s strange behavior. He knew well about the brutality of the underworld, especially in the mercenary world, where true friends were rare.

Though he and Henry were friends, they never confided in each other, and Henry wouldn’t share all his secrets.

Henry’s reaction just now was too extreme. Arthur thought, ‘If it was just a slip, why did he look like He’d seen a ghost?

Either way, Arthur decided to keep an eye on Nova.

Amid the crowd’s ridicule and the unusual reactions from Henry and Arthur, Nova remained expressionless. A true mercenary never let external factors interfere during a mission.

Once Nova entered mission mode, she simply blocked out all affecting factors around her. No taunt could affect her.

Since Alfred told her that winning the “Ultimate Test” would grant her the family’s wealth, she had treated this test as a mission to complete. After all, to a mercenary, money was everything.

“Silence, everyone.” At some point, Alfred had taken a high position, standing with his hands behind his back. His stern shout instantly hushed the crowd.

Everyone around Nova turned their gaze toward Alfred, who stood at an elevated position, as he continued. “The Ultimate Test will take place at the foot of the back hill.

There is a door there that has always been off-limits to you. Inside are dangerous hidden chambers and mechanisms built by the family’s ancestors for waining.`

“Today, it becomes your testing ground. All young members of the family may participate. The winner will become the new family head.”

After he finished speaking, the crowd erupted.

Young people were naturally drawn to thrill-based games like scripted murder mysteries and escape rooms-often called “trendy entertainment.”

A modified real-life escape room that combined competition and fun thrilled the young members.

Those around Nova’s age began cheering and clapping.

Only middle-aged members like Charles and Harvey remained unmoved.

Alfred frowned and raised his voice, “Don’t celebrate too soon. This is not a game. It’s a life-and-death test. The site dates back to the last century. Triggering certain mechanisms could be fatal.

“Any accidents will be treated as unforeseen incidents. Participation is voluntary. Decide for yourselves.

“The test begins now. The first person to pass all stages and exit through the main gate will be the new family head.”

The latter part of Alfred’s speech made several eager participants hesitate immediately.

“I’m not scared. I’m great at escape rooms,” one overconfident boy shouted and rushed out first. “Just days ago, I took girls from my class to an escape room. They screamed I was cool the whole time. First place is mine!”

Once someone took the lead, the main family members surged toward the back hill, as if speed alone would win them the position.

“Novie, when should we set out?” Maxwell looked at Nova.

Even Hannah, usually proud and impatient, after hearing the “potentially fatal” warning, instinctively turned to Nova,

Without realizing it, they had begun to see Nova as their anchor. After all, Nova was the strongest one among the three of them.

“No rush,” Nova said calmly, her eyes fixed on Arthur’s

nearby.

Like Ghost-Hammer, Henry was ineligible to participate since he wasn’t a member of the Blake family.

Nova said with a faint, sly grin, “Let them go first. We’ll move after they do.”

Not far away, Arthur, leading the main family’s strongest youth team, was preparing to start.

Everyone basically expected them to win the test.

Sensing Nova’s gaze, Arthur led his team toward the test site. “Let’s go.”

Once they were out of Nova’s sight, Arthur said gravely to his teammates, “Be careful of Nova”

y Blake who had bouncy twin tails and walked like a lively kitty, asked in confusion. “Why? Isn’t Nova just the daughter of that loser?

Jacob Blake, a boy with promment canine teeth, chimed in, “Yeah, someone like Nova isn’t even worth being our rival. We should watch out for Uncle Daniel’s people instead.”

Arthur’s eyes turned serious as he explained solemnly, “Ivy, Jacob, I suspect Nova is hiding her strength. She might well be someone at my level.”
