Chapter 77
Darkness was a symbol of sice, representing solitude and desolation.

The man standing in the night was tall and handsome, and even shrouded in shadow, Nova could clearly see him when the headlights swept over him.
His high nose bridge and thin lips formed a sharp profile, and his straight posture carried a hint of gloom within its mystery, his entire being radiating a suffocatingly powerful presence.
Nova’s heart skipped a beat as she spotted Damien. Sitting in the car, she thought, ‘Why is he here again? Is the head of Shadow Sanctum really that idle?”
Damien’s appearance reminded her of his words when they parted at the top-tier elite ball not long ago-“I’ll find you again.”
And now, he had indeed appeared, without Aiden in tow.
Nova was not naive enough to think Damien had come out of affection. She wasn’t the kind of woman who’d fall for a man just because he showed her a little attention. Love never ranked first in a mercenary’s life.
After parking the car, Charles, Hannah, and Maxwell finally spotted Damien at the gate.
“Who’s this guy? Nova, is he someone you know? He looks somewhat familiar,” Charles said, his tone laced with curiosity as he studied Damien carefully but didn’t recognize him.
At the previous ball, Damien had worn a black mask and different attire, so Charles didn’t immediately connect him with the man who had “bullied” Nova.
“Yeah, we’re acquainted,” Nova said, looking at Damien without revealing more.
In truth, even if he hadn’t come to her, she would have sought him out for Fiona’s leg injury.
The ball hadn’t been the right place to have a deep talk. Now that Damien had come here. His visit saved the trouble of tracking him down.
“He’s my friend,” Nova suddenly corrected herself, a faint, ambiguous smile curling her lips.
Charles nodded. “Oh, he’s your friend. Why didn’t you let us know in advance? We literally just arrived, and we didn’t prepare anything for guests.”
He didn’t overthink it, and he still didn’t recognize Damien, just waved him over with a casual gesturf. “Hey, come on in. Anyone Nova calls a friend is part of the family here.”
Charles rather approved of Damien’s handsome looks, nodding with approval.
Maxwell, however, shot a hostile glare at Damien.
Hannah folded her arms, nudged Nova with her elbow, and whispered, “Nova, he’s your boyfriend? Humph, you’ve only been back a few days, and you’re already bringing him home? Quite bold.”
Nova shook her head. “He’s not.”
She narrowed her eyes, assessing Damien’s well-built figure, and thought, ‘If we weren’t on opposing sides, I’d really take him as a lover to keep by my day and night. He’s handsome after all. Unfortunately, he’s the last person I should ever get involved with.

Nova leaned in and whispered, just loud enough for Hannah and Maxwell to hear, “Be careful around him.”
Hannah and Maxwell exchanged confused glances. Though they didn’t understand the full story, they immediately grew wary of Damien.
They walked into Blake Villa.
The moment Fiona spotted Damien, her happy smile froze. All her greeting words froze and died in her throat.
Stunned and confused, she blurted out, “Whose young man is this? So handsome…” She wheeled herself closer to Charles with a curious look.
Charles took off his suit jacket and handed it habitually to Fiona. “He’s Nova’s friend. He was standing outside, so I invited him in.”
“Oh, I see.” Fiona nodded in understanding.
“Mom, I need to talk with my friend. We’ll be upstairs,” Nova said, keeping her tone casual and easy.
Damien’s continued silence and the chilling presence around him radiated an ever-present threat like a ticking time bomb.. With a guy this unpredictable, Nova didn’t want her family exposed to him until she figured out his intentions.
Before anyone could react, Nova stepped forward, grabbed Damien by the collar, and led him away, leaving her parents with the impression of an intimate departure.
“Hey, Nova?” By the time Fiona processed it, Nova and Damien were already upstairs.
Fiona murmured, sounding a bit worried, “Is Nova dating already? When did this start? Before she returned? We didn’t even notice a clue at all.”
Charles grew more puzzled, “Why does that guy seem so familiar? I keep feeling I’ve seen him somewhere before.” Unbeknownst to her family, Nova and Damien reached the room upstairs. Keenly aware of the threat, she was on guard against him striking first from behind a precaution against ambush.
When she opened the door, she suddenly spun around and tried to seize his wrist. And as expected, he evaded effortlessly. Nova didn’t press further, leaning lazily against the door instead.
Γ She asked directly, “Here to discuss a deal?” she asked. “Good timing. I need à favor, too. I want to borrow someone. You know who. So, what are your terms?”
Nova let Damien in was precisely for a private negotiation.
High-stakes international dealings required equivalent exchange. Like the arms trade-one party sold weapons, and the other paid. It was simple and equal.
Nova didn’t rate herself all that highly on the international stage. Or to be honest, she was unsatisfied with her current achievements.
Even as the top mercenary, she couldn’t control her own fate. For example, being hunted by Devil’s Isle was way outside anything she could influence.
Nova knew herself perfectly. She was sure that she had her own value to offer Damien. For instance, serving him for a year.

he was the top mercenary. Having her work for Shadow Sanctum would be a win-win. And frankly, Nova was fine with it. Nova had imagined many possible terms Damien might throw her way, but she never expected him to ask for that.
Damien parted his thin lips and said in a low voice, “Marry me, and Shadow Sanctum will be yours.”
