Divorce
The moment the question left Iva’s lips, her entire body tensed as if bracing for impact, her fingers curling tightly into the fabric of her clothes, her breath shallow, uneven, fragile
Because this-
This was the question she had been avoiding the most.
Not the Alpha.
Not the pack.
Not even Nick.
Her mother.
The one person she never truly stopped thinking about, no matter how hard she tried to bury the memories, no matter how much she forced herself to move forward.
Because unlike the others-
Her mother had never been cold.
Never distant.
Never cruel.
She had been warmth in a place that often felt like ice
“I miss her so much…” Iva whispered, her voice breaking before Lori could even answer, her eyes filling again as the dam she had barely rebuilt started to crack once more.
Her lips trembled as she looked down at her hands.
“I miss her like crazy, Lori…” she admitted, her words spilling out now, raw and unfiltered. “Every day… every night… I kept thinking about her… wondering if she was okay… she was eating… if she was sleeping…”
Her voice faltered.
“If she was… thinking about me…”
A tear slipped down her cheek.
“She was the only one who…” Iva inhaled shakily. “…who made that place feel like home.”
Lori’s expression softened deeply, her eyes filled with sympathy as she watched her friend unravel again under the weight of those emotions.
“She was always different,” Iva continued, her voice distant now, lost in memories. “Warm… kind… even when everyone else was cold… even when they treated me like I didn’t belong…
She let out a broken breath.

“She never did, even after I came as the runt of the pack.”
Silence followed.
Heavy.
Respectful.
And then-
Lori spoke.
But this time-
Her tone was different.
Careful.
Measured.
“Iva…” she started slowly.
Something in her voice made Iva’s chest tighten instantly.
“… There’s something you need to know.”
Iva looked up, her heart already starting to race.
“What…?”
Lori hesitated for just a second.
Then-
“After you left… everything exploded. Actually…. Imploded.”
Iva stilled.
“What do you mean…?”
“The pack,” Lori clarified, her expression tightening. “Chaos. Arguments. Power struggles… especially between the ranked families.”
Iva frowned slightly, confusion mixing with unease.
“That doesn’t surprise me… probably they had to sort out the promise with the northers packs,” she murmured.
But Lori shook her head.
“No… you don’t understand,” she said quietly.
A pause.
“And your mother…”

Iva’s breath hitched.
“What about her?” she asked quickly, her voice rising slightly with
urgency.
Clam
Lori held her gaze.
“…She asked for a divorce.”
The words hit like a blow.
Iva froze.
Completely.
“…What?” she whispered, her voice barely there, her mind struggling to process.
“A bond dissolution,” Lori added softly.
Silence.
Absolute.
Iva stared at her, her lips parting slightly, but no sound came out at first.
Because that-
That was impossible. Almost no one in their society would ask for something like this, especially someone ranked.
Or at least-
It should have been.
“My mother would never-” she started, her voice shaking.
“She did,” Lori said gently, but firmly. “To everyone’s shock.”
Iva’s chest tightened painfully, her heart racing now, her thoughts spinning.
“But… why…?” she asked, her voice breaking again. “Why would she do that…?”
Lori exhaled slowly.
“For the moment she stayed,” she continued. “She kept her position as Gamma female… she didn’t leave the pack.”
Iva blinked, confused.
“That doesn’t make sense…”
“It does,” Lori said quietly. “She said it was for stability… to keep things from completely falling apart.”
A pause.
“But everyone knew… it was more than that.”

Iva’s hands trembled slightly.

“She broke the bond with your father, Iva,” Lori said softly. “That’s not something someone does lightly.”
The weight of it settled deeplý.
Her mother-
The woman who endured so much.
Who stayed.
Who protected.
She chose to break free, despite loving her chosen mate.
And somehow-
