was the male fate had chosen for her.

Her second chance.

And she didn’t even know his name.

The days that followed were torture in slow motion.

No matter how hard Iva tried, she couldn’t rip him out of her thoughts.

The stranger with the dark eyes haunted her waking moments, slipping into every crack of silence, every pause between breaths. She would be scrubbing pans at the sink, hands moving automatically, and suddenly she would feel him-those eyes again, that impossible gravity, the way her world had tilted the moment he spoke.

At night, it was worse.

She dreamed of him.

Not soft dreams. Not kind ones.

Dreams where his gaze burned into her, where that invisible thread pulled tight until her chest ached, where she reached for him and woke up gasping in the dark, heart hammering, sheets twisted around her legs as if she’d been running in her sleep.

The hole in her chest didn’t fade.

It deepened.

Each morning she woke with it heavier, more demanding, like something inside her was starving and growing desperate.

At work, she became a ghost.

Iva moved through her shifts on pure instinct-rinse, scrub, stack, repeat-her body remembering what her mind refused to hold. Orders were shouted, plates clattered, steam rose thick in the air, and she barely registered any of it.

She didn’t hear the snide remarks anymore.

Didn’t notice the glances.

Her thoughts were elsewhere.

Always elsewhere.

“Avalon…” she whispered one evening as she stood, elbows resting on the cold metal sink, staring at nothing. “We are doomed.”

Her wolf stirred immediately, alert but quiet.

“Why do you say that?”

Iva laughed softly, but there was no humor in it. “You are unlucky with me,” she said bitterly. “First Nick rejects us like we’re nothing. And now fate thinks it’s funny to bind us to a Lycan.”

Her throat tightened.

“A Lycan, Avalon,” she continued. “Do you know how ridiculous that sounds? He wouldn’t accept us in a million years. Be honest… how many she-wolves do you know who end up mated to Lycans?”

Silence answered her.

Not because Avalon didn’t know-but because she did.

The truth settled like ice in Iva’s veins.

“This was a mistake,” she murmured. “Fate made a mistake.”

“Fate doesn’t make mistakes,” Avalon said softly, but there was uncertainty beneath the words.

“Yeah, right… like pairing us with Nick,” Iva replied sarcastic.

The weight of sadness pressed down on Iva’s shoulders, draining her strength, dulling her senses. For the first time since she’d run away, doubt crept in-not about leaving the pack, but about whether she’d ever truly belong anywhere.

Meeting her second chance mate made her more confused than ever.

That evening, when her shift finally ended, she stepped outside into the cool night air, grateful for the quiet, for the distance from the heat and noise.

She barely took three steps.

A black SUV rolled up silently in front of her, headlights cutting off her path, engine humming low and powerful. The doors were tinted, the body sleek and expensive-danger wrapped in polished metal.

Her heart slammed into her ribs.

Before she could move, before she could even think about avoiding it, the window slid down.

A commanding voice spoke.

“Get in.”

Her blood froze.

That voice.

She would have recognized it anywhere-in a storm, in a crowd, in her dreams.

Slowly, her gaze lifted and froze in pace.
