The Messenger( Iva) novel Chapter 75

Tired-1

The gentle deceleration of the car pulled her out of the fog of her thoughts.

Concrete walls.

Dim lights.

The low hum of an engine dying.

They had arrived.

Iva blinked slowly, as if surfacing from deep water, and realized the car was gliding into the underground parking of Caleb’s building. The space felt vast and hollow, every sound echoing – the soft roll of tires, the faint click of the engine shutting off, the quiet shift of James’ weight as he stepped out.

For a moment she did not move.

Her body felt distant, heavy, like something she had borrowed but no longer controlled.

The door on her side opened.

James stood there, composed and silent as ever, one hand holding the door with respectful patience. His expression was carefully neutral, but she sensed the awareness behind it – the quiet acknowledgment of what he had witnessed.

She stepped out slowly as she forced a small, “Thank you.”

James just nodded.

The cold air of the underground level brushed against her damp cheeks, drying the traces of tears she had not noticed falling.

No more words passed between them.

None were needed.

They walked toward the elevator in silence, James half a step behind her – not crowding, not guiding, simply present. Protective without being imposing. A shadow that chose distance instead of pressure.

For that, she was deeply, wordlessly grateful.

The elevator doors slid open with a soft chime. The ascent felt longer than usual. The enclosed space still held the faint scent of Caleb – dark, warm, dangerously grounding. Her pulse quickened without

permission.

She kept her gaze lowered.

When the doors opened again, the penthouse greeted them in calm, elegant stillness. Soft lighting. Expansive space. Polished surfaces that reflected a life she could not imagine belonging to.

A different world.

One she had no right to occupy.

James stepped aside, allowing her to enter first. He remained near the doorway, waiting.

She turned to him, voice quiet and fragile but sincere.

“Thank you… for bringing me back.”

He inclined his head once respectful, wordless – then turned and left without another sound. The door closed behind him with a soft click that seemed louder than it was.

And suddenly…

She realised that she was alone.

The silence wrapped around her like a heavy blanket.

She stood there for several seconds, unmoving, listening to the faint echo of her own breathing in the vast

space.

The strength she had been holding together all day loosened at once.

Her legs carried her forward automatically, drawn toward the nearest piece of stability – the large couch in the living area. Its surface looked impossibly soft, impossibly expensive, impossibly out of place for someone like her.

She sank onto it slowly.

The cushions yielded beneath her weight, embracing her in a way nothing had in a very long time.

Her hands rested in her lap.

She stared ahead without truly seeing.

The events of the day replayed in fractured flashes – the destroyed room, the receptionist’s indifference,

the hollow emptiness where her belongings had been, the suffocating realization of vulnerability.

Her body began to tremble.

Not violently.

Not dramatically.

Just small, persistent tremors that traveled through her arms, her shoulders, her legs – as if her body was releasing what her mind could not process.

She did not try to stop it.

For once, she had nowhere to run. No task to hide behind. No immediate danger demanding action.

Only exhaustion.

Avalon’s presence curled quietly within her, a steady warmth pressed against the ache of her heart.

“Rest.”

The word felt like permission.
