It wasn’t just about keeping someone safe.
Primrose wanted to build a circle of people she could rely on, people who would stand by her side no matter what.
If something terrible happened in the future, she wanted to know there would be someone willing to help her.
"What do you say, Sir Callen?" she asked, her eyes filled with hope, so much so that it looked like she might cry if he turned her down.
Feeling the weight of her gaze, Callen finally gave in and nodded. "I’ll accept your offer, Your Majesty."
[How could I say no when she looked at me like that?] he thought.
[Well ... there’s no harm in becoming her personal guard. Besides, from now on, I’ll train harder so I can truly protect her from anything.]
Primrose smiled so brightly that it felt like the sun had risen early just to match her joy.
"You made the right choice, Sir Callen," she said enthusiastically. "I’ll let His Majesty know right away. Once he makes it official, you’ll receive all the benefits of being my personal guard."
Callen blinked, his smile fading slightly as he asked nervously, "Your Majesty ... you haven’t told His Majesty about this yet?"
"I haven’t," Primrose replied casually. "But don’t worry, my husband won’t say no to me."
Callen gasped, staring at her in shock. "No, Your Majesty! I thought he already knew! Normally, when a soldier is reassigned, we always inform him first!"
"I’ll tell him soon," Primrose said, completely unbothered.
[What should I do?!] Callen panicked inside.
[What if His Majesty thinks I’m using Her Majesty’s kindness to get a promotion? He’ll kill me, won’t he? Should I reject the offer now? Yes, yes, maybe it’s not too late.]
Before he could speak, Primrose turned to him with a soft look as she opened her bedroom door. "Please ... don’t change your mind, Sir Callen. I would be very sad if you suddenly decided not to be my personal guard after I’ve already spoken to my husband about it."
Callen froze in place, no longer daring to say a word, especially not about backing out.
"I won’t change my mind, Your Majesty," he said quietly, accepting his fate.
"That’s good." Primrose smiled sweetly, then stepped inside her room and gently closed the door.
She actually knew she should have told Edmund first before choosing someone to be her personal guard.
However, if she had brought it up first, there was a good chance Edmund would’ve chosen someone else instead of Callen.
That was why she decided to convince Callen first, then tell Edmund about it later.
Besides, she was confident that Edmund wouldn’t reject her request. And if he did reject it, well, she still had her secret weapon: tears.
That usually worked on him.
Primrose looked at Bunny, the rabbit doll sitting on her bed, and thought maybe she could use it to inform Edmund about Callen.
"Edmund, I’ve chosen Sir Callen to be my personal guard," she said sweetly.
Then she climbed onto the bed and softened her voice into a gentle plea. "Can you handle the paperwork? I want Sir Callen to be officially appointed by the day after tomorrow."
The doll’s glassy eyes suddenly glowed a soft shade of blue, sparkling in the warm light of the room.
Primrose lay on her stomach in front of it, the curve of her neckline visible as she leaned forward, just enough to tease him.
